Sorry I'm so late with this. I just forgot. This is a complete poem from my very favorite poet:

THE FUNERAL.
by John Donne

WHOEVER comes to shroud me, do not harm,
_ _ _ _ _ Nor question much,
That subtle wreath of hair, which crowns my arm ;
The mystery, the sign, you must not touch ;
_ _ _ _ _ For 'tis my outward soul,
Viceroy to that, which then to heaven being gone,
_ _ _ _ _ Will leave this to control
And keep these limbs, her provinces, from dissolution.

For if the sinewy thread my brain lets fall
_ _ _ _ _ Through every part
Can tie those parts, and make me one of all,
Those hairs which upward grew, and strength and art
_ _ _ _ _ Have from a better brain,
Can better do 't ; except she meant that I
_ _ _ _ _ By this should know my pain,
As prisoners then are manacled, when they're condemn'd to die.

Whate'er she meant by it, bury it with me,
_ _ _ _ _ For since I am
Love's martyr, it might breed idolatry,
If into other hands these relics came.
_ _ _ _ _ As 'twas humility
To afford to it all that a soul can do,
_ _ _ _ _ So 'tis some bravery,
That since you would have none of me, I bury some of you.

What card am I?

Hi Kim

A few cards came to mind with this poem but I will go with 5 of Cups.

Quite evocative...

How about XX Judgement ?

gloria  25 Apr 2004
Morning Kim.....I'll try The Hanged Man.

Suriel  25 Apr 2004
erm.......i'll give it a try
how about "strength"? :D

ncefafn  25 Apr 2004
Good morning, all. CreativeFire, I like your new avatar! :) Five of Cups was a card I considered for this poem, but not the one I chose.

Hi, jmd. Glad you like the poem. Yes, Judgement would be a good match for this poem, as would the Hanged Man, Gloria, but again neither was the one I chose.

Hi, Lswern, glad you could join us in the Games section. I could see Strength for this now, though I didn't when I was choosing the card.

Keep guessing!

I find this poem so elusive.....one minute I'm thinking I understand it, then off it goes, leaving me sooo puzzled. :(

I'll go for the spiritual journey of the 6/Swords.

ncefafn  25 Apr 2004
Sorry, Gloria, not the 6 of Swords.

Kim

CreativeFire  25 Apr 2004
My next choice was going to be the Hanged Man, but I see Ros already has guessed that one.

So I will go with the 10 of Swords...

The World?

ncefafn  26 Apr 2004
Sorry, none of the above. :)

The Magician?

mercenary30  26 Apr 2004
is the Four of Swords....

ncefafn  26 Apr 2004
No, not yet. Keep guessing. And Gloria, what happened???

Kim

mercenary30  26 Apr 2004
Knight of Cups?

Suriel  26 Apr 2004
another try! :D
is it the tower?

ncefafn  26 Apr 2004
Both of you are edging closer to my interpretation of this poem, but you aren't there yet.

Kim

Suriel  26 Apr 2004
may i ask a question?
is the card a major card or minor card?
if it is a minor card, then i won't be guessing any right.....because i only have 22 cards myself, so i don't know anything about the minor cards!

miss_apples  26 Apr 2004
9 of swords?

Er, unfortunately, I don't think it would be fair to the other players to answer that. What I can do is give you a link to a site that shows all the cards in the Robin Wood deck. That's as good as the RWS for this game. You can see the deck here.

And sorry, Miss Apples, it's not the 9 of Swords.

I think it's hint time. Look at the last 2 lines of each stanza.

Suriel  26 Apr 2004
ok..third try!
the devil?

ncefafn  26 Apr 2004
And Lswern wins it!

This poem, like many of Donne's love poems, deals with themes of obsession, desire and revenge. The wreath of his lover's hair is the "outward symbol" of his soul; it is his "manacle" which continues to "control" him after his death; this symbol might "breed idolatry"; and finally, it is his revenge, since she would have nothing to do with him in life, he takes her to the grave with him.

So, Lswern, the next literary quote is yours to choose. Since you're new here, I've cut and pasted the rules for the game below, with a friendly nod to Kiama, our moderator and their author:

What Card Am I? Literature Clues:

-This is virtually the same as What Card Am I? but instead of using clues from our own minds, we use passages from literature.
-It could be anything as short as:

"From Goethe's Probleme, 1823 (amongst, ie, his scientific papers, rather than his literary ones):
The manifestation of a phenomenon is not independent of the observer - it is caught up and entangled in his individuality." (by JMD, for the Magician)

to paragraphs from a book.

*Please cite your sources clearly, and when the card has been guessed correctly, explain your choice.*

Suriel  26 Apr 2004
thankx......!:D
