From "Put Yourself in My Shoes," by Raymond Carver:
"As he drove, he looked at the people who hurried along the sidewalks with shopping bags. He glanced at the gray sky, filled with flakes, and at the tall buildings with snow in the crevices and on the window ledges. He tried to see everything, save it for later. He was between stories, and he felt despicable."
from the collection Where I'm Calling From , published by Vintage Contemporaries, New York: 1988.
What card am I?

Just from the RWCS artwork, I'd say...
5 of Pentacles.

I usually like to wait a little, to get in guesses from several people before I reply, but I've got insomnia tonight.
The Five of Pents was one of the cards I considered for this quote, but ultimately not the one I went with. And the funny thing was, I didn't even consider the artwork. Good call, Matt.

The card that immediatley came to thought for me was 8 of Cups - a figure wandering on, having left behind something before starting something new (stories?)

Another one I considered, Creative Fire, but another one I let go in favor of a different card that I felt better expressed the character's situation.
By the way, if anyone reading this thread is a writer, I highly recommend this story. The last line in the selection I quoted is, I think, one of the eternal verities of the writer's life, which makes the story's ending such a complete and satisfying triumph.

Ten of Swords - certainly characterises feeling despicable and as a ten one thing (story) had ended and another is going to begin

Dead Star has beaten me to it with 7/Discs......ideas still growing, but not yet ready to assimilate into anything concrete.
So shall go for another angle with 4/Cups. Lack of motivation and depression.

Minderwiz has it! I considered several other cards for this quote, but none so well captured the despair of an ending before one has moved on to a new beginning as the Ten of Swords. Over to you, Minderwiz!
