Literature Clue - April 18 - Solved

TemperanceAngel  17 Apr 2004
This is the first time I have done this, so please excuse me if it's too easy/hard!

" A gust of wind burst into the room, flattening the candle flames. The heavy curtain billowed out, the window was flung open and high above appeared a full moon - not a setting moon, but a midnight moon. A dark green cloth stretched from the window-sill to the floor and down it walked Ivan's night visitor, the man who called himself the master. He was wearing his hospital clothes - dressing gown, slippers and the black cap from which he never parted. His unshaven face twitched in a grimace, he squinted with fear at the candle flames and a flood of moonlight bolied around him. "

From 'The Master and Margarita' by Mikhail Bulgakov

I am looking forward to your responses :) XTAX

Okay I will start of the guessing and go with my first thought and visually obvious one to me ... The Moon

CreativeFire

OakDragon  17 Apr 2004
The Fool?

TemperanceAngel  17 Apr 2004
The Moon: yes it is obvious, but not the one I am thinking of!

The Fool: I actually never thought of that, but now that I see it that's a great answer, but still not the one.

The Magician?

How about Death?

just something about him being the "master" and a night visitor afraid of the light. Not knowing the story itself I am really "guessing" with this one :D

CreativeFire

TemperanceAngel  17 Apr 2004
Death, no :)

ncefafn  17 Apr 2004
Just for the sense of a grand entrance . . . The Chariot?

Kim

OakDragon  18 Apr 2004
The Devil?

gloria  18 Apr 2004
The Tower?

jmd  18 Apr 2004
I too would have said the Devil...

so how about, knowing that you use the WCS, the

5 Cups ?

TemperanceAngel  18 Apr 2004
The Chariot: Was going to be my choice, but I couldn't get the card I am thinking of out of my head.

The Devil: It's possible, but nope.

Tower: No

Five of Cups: Another one of my possible choices, but then everyone doesn't use RWS, so no.

I have very strange logic, and perhaps that is a definate clue. Either that or you will never want me to play this game again!

XTAX

ncefafn  18 Apr 2004
Okay, I'm going to guess this even though I know you're not using the Halloween Tarot:

The Lovers?

TemperanceAngel  18 Apr 2004
Great avatar, ncefafn, what does your name mean?

The Lovers is not the card I am thinking of. XTAX

miss_apples  18 Apr 2004
The Star?

Thanks. My name means Not Cool Enough For A Funky Name. :D

Next guess: Knight of Swords?

Kim

jmd  18 Apr 2004
OK.... so far, suggested:
    5 Cups

    Knight of Swords

    Magician
    Lovers
    Chariot
    Death
    Devil
    Tower
    Star
    Moon
    Fool

how about the World ?

lionette  18 Apr 2004
How about the Hermit ...

CreativeFire  19 Apr 2004
to try something other than majors ...

7 of Swords - this one comes to mind as it seems that the night visitor is covertly sneaking into his room at night

CreativeFire

gloria  19 Apr 2004
4/Pents?.....purely for desciption.

Diana  19 Apr 2004
Ivan sounds like he's a real nutcase.

Which card would symbolise this kind of a nut?

Some kind of Sword, possibly. If 8s represent Balance and Equilibrium, perhaps this card would be an 8 of Swords - reversed.

Or are we not supposed to concentrate on Ivan?

TemperanceAngel  19 Apr 2004
Hello everyone, I am starting to see my logic really is bizarre!

The Star: Not the one.

Knight of Cups: Still not the one.

World: No

Hermit: One of my choices, but not the one.

Seven of Swords: No.

Four of Pents: Not the one I am thinking of.

Eight of Swords Rx: Not that one either.

Diana asked a question and here is a clue: Ivan is not the focus (but it does help if you know a little about him, I would think) and although he is male, the card I am thinking of does not have a male on it. Now that's a big clue!!!!

XTAX

ncefafn  19 Apr 2004
What about my guess of the Knight of Swords?

*Edited to add: Oops, just saw your comment that it's not a male on the card! As Emily Litella says, "Never mind."

Kim

gloria  19 Apr 2004
4/Swords?

ncefafn  19 Apr 2004
8 of Wands?

mercenary30  19 Apr 2004
Nine of Swords?

OakDragon  19 Apr 2004
The Hierophant?

TemperanceAngel  19 Apr 2004
Sorry ncefafn, it's not the Knight of Swords or the Eight of Wands.

Gloria the Four of Swords is not the one I am thinking of and Merc the Nine of Swords isn't it either.

Oakdragon, the Hierophant has a male on it, so it's not the one either.

Wasn't my clue clear? It has a female on the card....

XTAX

mercenary30  19 Apr 2004
Queen of Swords?

TemperanceAngel  19 Apr 2004
Sorry Merc, no Queen of Swords.... XTAX

ncefafn  20 Apr 2004
How about the Queen of Cups?

miss_apples  20 Apr 2004
Queen of wands?

Ha! You're making the unwarranted assumption that I had the wherewithal to read your response properly! ;) :P

How about Strength?

TemperanceAngel  20 Apr 2004
We still haven't found the right card, but with the huge clue I gave you, it won't be far off.

Come on, I know you can do it! XTAX

gloria  20 Apr 2004
The High Priestess because of her connection to the moon.

jmd  20 Apr 2004
OK.... so far, cards suggested have been:
    8 Staffs
    Queen Staffs

    5 Cups
    Queen Cups

    4 Coins

    4 Swords
    7 Swords
    8 Swords
    9 Swords
    Knight of Swords
    Queen Swords

    Magician
    Papess/High Priestess
    Pope/Hierophant
    Lovers
    Chariot
    Hermit
    Strength
    Death
    Devil
    Tower
    Star

You beat me too it! Thats gotta be it.

TemperanceAngel  20 Apr 2004
Temperance: sorry jmd, no.

Merc: Two of Swords is not the one.

High Priestess: You are so, so close to it with the HP, but it's not the one!

ncefafn  20 Apr 2004
The Empress?

Hooray ncefafn YOU WON!!!!!! I knew we would get there sooner or later...

Now according to the rules I should explain my reasoning and if you think I am completely off the mark, then do let me know!!!

The full moon was a huge factor, I was thinking about the full moon being pregnant, which made made me think of the Empress. And then there was the green cloth, again Empress, garden, fertility and abundance.

The master was male, but what kept me in the Empress theme was that number 3 is the first masculine number and the fact that he was squinting in the candlelight made me think he wasn't comfortable in those surroundings. Like our Empress, I've only ever seen her being represented in the day, she's not a night gal = day, sunlight + action.

Diana says Ivan was a nutcase, but he was also very creative or a creator, he wrote a book.

The Hermit or Eight of Cups first came to mind, but I couldn't get Empress out. I kept thinking are you crazy? Then I was going to go with the Chariot, but that Empress stayed with me...

XTAX

ncefafn  20 Apr 2004
Well, I really owe this to Gloria, because if she hadn't guess the HP and you hadn't said she was so close I honestly never would've come up with the Empress.

However, Gloria is, I believe, running another one of the games on this forum, so I will be honored to fulfill my needs as your next Miss America -- oh, sorry, wrong movie. Next Literature Clue Hostess.

Excelsior!

Kim

gloria  21 Apr 2004
No worries Kim....I wouldn't have gone for The Empress anyway. I really thought jmd had guessed correctly with Temperance.
I may be wrong but I assumed the Master had arrived to 'transform' Ivan the poet into a Fool by way of an injection of some kind.
And as Temperance is associated with the moon, transformation and alchemy, I was thinking, "oh why didn't I go for that."
Mind you, I would have still been wrong.

TemperanceAngel  21 Apr 2004
Yes, well I did think my logic was quite bizarre! XTAX
