Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

The Hermit?

Nice try Oakdragon...that card would be my second take on this poem. But I had a different card in mind for this.

My first thought on this one is the 4 of Swords.

Pausing on his journey, taking a rest before moving on.

Eight of Cups?

So much travel -- the Chariot?

OakDragon  03 Apr 2004
Five of Pentacles?

I have to agree with lionette, this card poem to me suggests the chariot.

Keep trying everyone. The chariot was another one I was thinking of using. You really have to dig deep into this poem to see what exactly he is talking about, the poem means a little more than just stopping in the woods ;)

okay I have tried to approach it from a different angle ....

how about the 6 of Cups

The first lines made me think that he has paused on his journey in a familiar place - a place where he has been before - remembering.

Death.

The Hanged Man?

He knows what he needs to do and accepts it, rather than lazily doing what his ego temporarily wants.

The Hanged Man?....pausing for reflection.

Congrats ncefan...YOU GOT IT!!!

It was Death and here is my explanation.

I was told by a teacher that this poem is basically about a man on his death bed, but then he decides that he has too many things to do and it is not his time to go yet. Hence the last line that says "I have miles to go before I sleep"

Holy cow!

Okay, let me go look up some stuff and I'll be back directly . . .
