"In fact things now worked the other way. Being a witch was an honorable trade in the mountains, but only the young ones invested in real crystal balls and colored knives and dribbly candles. The old ones . . . they stuck with simple kitchen cutlery, fishing floats, bits of wood, whose very ordinariness subtly advertised their status. Any fool could be a witch with a runic knife, but it took skill to be one with an apple corer."
-- from Carpe Jugulum, by Terry Pratchett
Which card am I?

As the Hermit is taken...
how about the Bateleur/Magician ?

Good morning, all.
jmd, the Magician would have been the most likely choice, so of course that's not the one I chose. :)
Gloria, the Hermit's willingness to go it on his own speak to this quote, and I considered him, but ultimately went with another card.
CreativeFire, sorry, not the 2 of Wands, either.
Lionette, I never would have associated humility and simplicity with the Heirophant, but your reasoning is on track.
Keep trying!

This quote refers primarily to Granny Weatherwax, if you know the series.

Ten of Pentacles - Reaching the pinicle of the practice?

Have never read Terry Pratchett....but after these quotes may give it a try.
From the few snippets I've found about Granny Weatherwax, I shall go for The Chariot.

Merc, what does SWAG mean? Sealed With A Groan? A Grunt? A Group-hug?
But anyway, although Granny has definitely reached the pinnacle of her practice, the 10 of Pents is not the card I was going for.
And Gloria, yes, Granny is very Chariot-like, and this quote indicates her direct, forthright nature, but the Chariot is not the card I chose.

What about The High Priestess?....as GW....'one who knows'!!

I am going to try the King of Pentacles as the master of his craft (or hers in the sense of mastery = king)

Gloria, I got a chill down my spine when I read GW . . . then I realized you were referring to Granny. Sorry, not the HP.
And Merc, for a wild-a$$ guess, that was pretty close. Well, in the right ballpark.

My next guess was gonna be Queen/Wands...after your comments...not so sure.

My next quess will be the Queen of Pentacles, she can use anything to get what she wants.

Nope, not yet. Sorry, but keep trying. There's a key in the last sentence, by the way.

okay will try the Queen of Swords - going with the possible clue of the "knife" ? :D
Also she is a strong individualistic woman who uses her intellect as well as her skills.

And CreativeFire wins it!
Yes, I was going with the Queen of Swords. Here's a description of this card from MKG's Tarot Reversals: "Her no-nonsense self-reliance can be intimidating, yet you can count on her to speak frankly and cut away the inessential so as to pierce through to the heart of any situation." To me, the Queen of Swords is the epitome of brass-tacks practicality.
The Queen of Pentacles was another I considered, but while earthy, she's much too touchy-feely to open her kitchen drawer, pull out a butcher knife and cast a spell with it. Sensory details are important to the Queen of Pents, so she'd want something pretty, a nice jewel-encrusted athame. The Queen of Swords hasn't got time for all that folderol, and besides, she's got to carve up the chicken for dinner anyway, so might as well get the old knife out now.
Over to you, CreativeFire!
