What Card Am I? (Literature clue) 4th May - Solved

"Now, we'll start this band of robbers and call it Tom Sawyer's Gang. Everybody that wants to join has got to take an oath, and write his name in blood."
Everybody was willing. So Tom got out a sheet of paper that he had wrote the oath on, and read it. It swore every boy to stick to the band, and never tell any of the secrets; and if anybody done anything to any boy in the band, whichever boy was ordered to kill that person and his family must do it, and he mustn't eat and he mustn't sleep till he had killed them and hacked a cross in their breasts, which was the sign of the band.
And if anybody that belonged to the band told the secrets, he must have his throat cut, and then have his carcass burnt up and the ashes scattered all around, and his name blotted off of the list with blood and never mentioned again by the gang, but have a curse put on it and be forgot forever.
Everybody said it was a real beautiful oath, and asked Tom if he got it out of his own head. He said, some of it, but the rest was out of pirate-books and robber-books, and every gang that was high-toned had it.

Then they all stuck a pin in their fingers to get blood to sign with, and I made my mark on the paper.
"Now," says Ben Rogers, "what's the line of business of this Gang?"
"Nothing only robbery and murder," Tom said.

From Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (edited in places)
Okay...What card am I? :)

Hi there Gloria, Nice quote my friend !

I don't know why, or even if I am close, but I see the knight of wands in the quote... ....Like Tom has this enthusiasm for adventure and a certain impatience and excitement. Perhaps a very real and honest approach to life, with a somewhat hasty nature.
....................;)

jmd  04 May 2004
Devil?

mercenary30  04 May 2004
I am not sure if we are looking for the meaning of the card or the depiction to match.......

But I will guess Seven of Swords.

ncefafn  04 May 2004
Page of Wands? ;)

Kim

gloria  04 May 2004
Hi Debs....I seem to remember your 'penchant' for Mark Twain...but sadly not the one. :(
And jmd...not the Devil....but be ready....I reckon there's every chance a list will be needed.
Sorry mercenary, not 7/Swords...not the aspect of the quote I had in mind.
And Kim....definitely not the Page/Wands.

ncefafn  04 May 2004
10 of Swords - going to extremes :P

Kim

mercenary30  04 May 2004
Three of Wands?

gloria  04 May 2004
Yes I agree Kim, they are going to extremes...but not the one.
Mercenary...sorry but not 3/Wands.

mercenary30  04 May 2004
2 of Wands?

ncefafn  04 May 2004
Hee hee! Four of Wands!

Kim

Suriel  04 May 2004
just a wild guess.....the hanged man??.....:P

Dark Eyes  04 May 2004
Hi Gloria, yes, Mark Twain is one of my favourites, love the way Tom Sawyer is written, excellent descriptive passages of adventure and characters of the times.
I will next try... 7 of cups.
Daydreams and fantasies... Castles in the air...?

hedgecub  04 May 2004
What about the 3 of Cups?

jmd  04 May 2004
OK... here's a list (it just helps, I hope :)):
    Papess/High Priestess
    Hanged Man
    Devil

    2 Bastons/Wands
    3 Bastons/Wands
    4 Bastons/Wands
    Page Bastons/Wands
    Knight Bastons/Wands

    3 Cups
    7 Cups

    7 Swords
    10 Swords
How about II the Papess/High Priestess... she's got the book :D

gloria  05 May 2004
You know jmd, the High Priestess was a card I gave some thought to because of all the secrecy involved. (Thanks for list by the way. :) )
But....it is Debs that is the warmest. :)

jmd  05 May 2004
5 Sticks ?

mercenary30  05 May 2004
Four of Pentacles.

jmd  05 May 2004
...oops, I meant to type:

7 Sticks!

(I guess it can therefore be two guesses :D))

And mercenary...sorry but not 4/Pents either.

ncefafn  05 May 2004
The Tower?

gloria  05 May 2004
No, not the Tower Kim.

hedgecub  05 May 2004
Err, 5 of Swords?

lionette  05 May 2004
Queen Swords --

Dark Eyes  05 May 2004
How about the "Fool" Gloria?

............He is a very energetic and adventure bound ? also he sometimes may exaggerate to get a response? He is ready to lead others on a very exciting journey despite the risks !!! ;)

le pendu  06 May 2004
Maybe the Hierophant?

Oaths and crosses...

robert

gloria  06 May 2004
Hi all...especially Robert...welcome to this particular part of the forum. :)
You are all still on the wrong track. :(
Debs...you had the right idea with your second guess. :)

Dark Eyes  06 May 2004
Ahhhh...... 6 of cups...?

... back in the good ol' days when life was fun and we believed that our dreams always came true. ... ;)

And yes, a big welcome to Robert!!

jmd  06 May 2004
An updated list (for those who may want it...):
    Papess/High Priestess
    Pope/Hierophant
    Hanged Man
    Devil
    Tower
    Fool

    2 Bastons/Wands
    3 Bastons/Wands
    4 Bastons/Wands
    5 Bastons/Wands
    7 Bastons/Wands
    Page Bastons/Wands
    Knight Bastons/Wands

    3 Cups
    6 Cups
    7 Cups

    4 Deniers/Coins

    5 Swords
    7 Swords
    10 Swords
    Queen of Swords
...and it is wonderful to find Robert here too, so I'll add my welcome :)...

I also suspect that the 6 of Cups may be right, with the children, in the WCS depiction, perhaps secretly playing. But as that is taken, how about 8 Cups... on the WCS depiction, the person walking off may be one who has just made that secret pact ;)

I can't give you a better clue than this.....as you'll realise when you hit on it. :)

Dark Eyes  06 May 2004
Phew...., I have almost got my head around it, but there are many cards still to go that could fit the quote ! I love the quote, it is fabulous and opens up so many possibilities for tarot cards.

I am going to try the "sun" card.
To me, the sun card indicates childish fun and freedom to express in a lighthearted manner. That all of life doesn't have to be so serious and our fantasies can be made real in our times of fun.
Also, I guess the Sun could be a castle in the air...?.....:*..Maybe........... :|

Oh so close Debs but not in meaning. :)
Think of your words above.

Dark Eyes  06 May 2004
Aaaaaagh.....!!!.... ( is there an emoticon for frustration...?)

Knight of cups...? he does live in a fuzzy world of fantasy, he is a bit woolly headed and daydreams of saving the distressed damsel and living happily ever after. He thinks he can do anything, put everything right in the world, but it is all in his mind...?... :)

gloria  06 May 2004
Not the one Debs...going off beam now.

Dark Eyes  06 May 2004
O.K. putting this into perspective now...Off beam, sunbeam,... moonbeam...? Not sunbeam... must be moonbeam..? :joke:

There is an element of deception and fantasy in the passage, also some rather fanantical and crazy ideas... Could it be the Moon card Gloria..? Moon could be another castle in the air... ?
.................. :smoker:

gloria  06 May 2004
CONGRATULATIONS DEBS!!!
Yes it is the Moon......
Blood, guts, stabbing and murder..... and erm…...oh yes kids.
Kids taking on make-believe roles. Their talk of violence isn’t for the real world.
It is sheer fantasy….pure escapism.

Well done Debs...and now...over to you. :)

Dark Eyes  06 May 2004
Woo Hoo !

Thank you Gloria, at last the answer emerges, just like the moon itself emerges over the hills. Hehehe, it is very obvious now,. I will be back soon with a new game, a little time needed to organise it.
That was a good one Gloria, I like the passages you come up with . Well done again.
Regards... D...... :)
