My Madonna - by Robert Service
I haled me a woman from the street,
Shameless, but, oh, so fair!
I bade her sit in the model's seat
And I painted her sitting there.
I hid all trace of her heart unclean;
I painted a babe at her breast;
I painted her as she might have been
If the Worst had been the Best.
She laughed at my picture and went away.
Then came, with a knowing nod,
A connoisseur, and I heard him say;
" 'Tis Mary, the Mother of God."
So I painted a halo round her hair,
And I sold her and took my fee,
And she hangs in the church of Saint Hillaire,
Where you and all may see.
What card am I?

7/Cups?

Awww, Gloria changed her vote.......hehehe
I tell you, the seven of cups is soooooo close, and if I was thinking about the guy that bought the painting that would be the right answer.
Empress is not it either.
My focus in this poem is the artist. He is the only consistent person throughout the poem.........
That should be a good hint.

7/Swords....cunning, deception...a right rip-off.....?

3 of Pentacles

Ooohhhh...the Seven of Swords, works, except it was deception behind the back.......sneaky, while they weren't looking.
The artist was sneaky right in his face!
Three of pentacles is not the right one either, but he certainly got paid, didn't he.

The Magician, for the trickster aspect?

I would say artist = magician, but that is still the not the card I was looking for....it was his action.....Seven of Swords was very close.
At this point you all have literally hit every single card I thought about when I chose this poem, except for the one that I decided on........ :D

I'm going back to my original thought which was High Priestess.
What you see isn't necessarily what you get.

Ahhh, your getting colder, Gloria.
My clues are not steering anyone closer......hhmmmmmm
If the magician's trick brings you victory, which card shows that?

Is it the Moon?

Nope..... not the 6 of Wands.
Moon...hmmm. Didn't think about that one......should have at least considered it....
I have to see if I can come up with any good clues.....the ones I am giving seem to be leading you all away from something you were so close too....

Guess I'll do the "jmd" here:
Empress
7 Cups
7Swords
3 Pents
Magician
High Priestess
6 Wands
Moon
6 Swords
Devil
and......tada.....9 Pentacles? In RW, she always looks so "perfect" royal and together...but, behind the painting...every house has its secrets....

Nope still not the answer I am looking for.
Now I wonder if I am just "off".

Ah! How about The Chariot?
You did mention 'steering' that may have been a clue. :)

Not the Chariot.
Looking for clues in my sentences? I will give you a few more stabs at the answer before I give good clues....

Page/Swords?

Nope.....not those either...
If the Seven of Swords represents victory by subterfuge, which card represents victory right in their face.....(in this case, they didn't even know what happened.)
