Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 08 May 2004, and now archived in the Forum Library.

gloria  08 May 2004

The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.

Confucius

Hope this isn't too difficult. })

hedgecub  08 May 2004
*strikes wildly* The Hermit?

gloria  08 May 2004
Not such a 'wild strike' hedgecub....but no not the one.

cheekyminx  08 May 2004
I was thinking of the Pope? Definitly not the fool as he's not a man yet. Nope to the emperor and the hermit. Unless he's a king? King of Cups or King of Wands?

mercenary30  08 May 2004
:(

She is stealing all the guesses....

Magician?

cheekyminx  08 May 2004

I'm sorry for stealing all the guesses. Its hard being a gemini. Remember there are two of me ;) hehe

gloria  08 May 2004
Looks like there at least five of you. You really are a cheekyminx!
Sorry mercenary but not Magician.

ncefafn  08 May 2004
8 of Pentacles

hedgecub  08 May 2004
So far, it's not the:
· Hermit
· Heirophant
· King of Cups
· King of Wands
· Magician

(gloria, am I right? I'm not sure how to interpret your response to cheekyminx's multitude of guesses ;) )

How about Strength?

gloria  08 May 2004
Hi Kim...no not 8/Pents.
Thanks hedgecub, your list does make it clearer, but another two to add from cheekyminx was Fool and Emperor.
And no sorry not Strength.

hedgecub  08 May 2004
Okay, so it's not the:
· Hermit
· Heirophant
· Fool
· Emperor
· King of Cups
· King of Wands
· Magician
· 8 of Pentacles
· Strength

*browses through her just-acquired African Tarot* This is great; I get to know my new deck, and I get to play a quiz game at the same time! :D

How about the Hanged Man?

mercenary30  08 May 2004
King of Pentacles?

gloria  08 May 2004
Sorry hedgy and mercenary but no to Hanged Man and King/Pents.
A clue: Sometimes in-action is superior to action.

ncefafn  08 May 2004
4 of Swords?

gloria  08 May 2004
Sorry Kim no. :(

hedgecub  08 May 2004
2 of Swords?

Suriel  08 May 2004
Knight of Swords?

mercenary30  08 May 2004
Knight of Wands?

Phoenix Rising  08 May 2004
King of Swords

gloria  09 May 2004
None so far......
There are three 'faces' or 'sides' to this particular card.
One fits the clue.....:)

jmd  09 May 2004
updated suggestions:
    Magician
    Emperor
    Pope/Hierophant
    Hermit
    Strength
    Hanged Man
    Fool

    Knight of Bastons/Wands
    King of Bastons/Wands

    King of Cups

    8 Coins
    King of Coins

    2 Swords
    4 Swords
    Knight of Swords
    King Swords

How about the Chariot ?

gloria  09 May 2004
Hi jmd...no not the Chariot....although with hindsight it does fit the clue pretty well.
It isn't a Major. The RWS deck shows the three 'sides' or 'options' I mentioned earlier in a clearer light. G.

Phoenix Rising  09 May 2004
3 pentacles

gloria  09 May 2004
Hi Phoenix....no not 3/Pents.
Maybe 'takes' on the card I have in mind is a better word.

you'll just have to excuse me but I'm just trying out my new found highlighting skills
This is just a big pluck 3 of wands.

hedgecub  09 May 2004
*keeps the list updated*

So it's not the:

Magician
Emperor
Pope/Hierophant
Hermit
Strength
Hanged Man
Fool
Chariot

Knight of Bastons/Wands
King of Bastons/Wands

King of Cups

3 of Coins/Pentacles
8 of Coins/Pentacles
King of Coins/Pentacles

2 of Swords
4 of Swords
Knight of Swords
King of Swords

Hey, what about the 7 of Pentacles?

gloria  09 May 2004

Or you could say...."You don't have to be all mouth and trousers to walk tall."
The card is one of action...but there is more than one way to skin a rabbit.....or so I'm told.
Does that help? :)

hedgecub  09 May 2004
What about the 6 of Cups?

gloria  09 May 2004
Quote:
The card is one of action....

Not 6/Cups hedgecub. :(

hedgecub  09 May 2004
*starts to flail about wildly*

The Star?

ncefafn  09 May 2004
3 of Wands?

gloria  09 May 2004
Oh dear, the trail is very cold Kim and hedgecub. (bye the way not a major)
Now how can I 'point' you in the right direction???

ncefafn  09 May 2004
Oh, geez, I don't know . . . Death? In the Robin Wood, he's pointing . . .

gloria  09 May 2004
No it is NOT a major....:)

ncefafn  09 May 2004
One last try and I'm giving up . . . 7 of Wands

Gaidheal  09 May 2004
Five of Rods, maybe?

hedgecub  09 May 2004
It's not a major, and it's not the:

3 of Bastons/Wands
Knight of Bastons/Wands
King of Bastons/Wands

6 of Cups
King of Cups

3 of Coins/Pentacles
7 of Coins/Pentacles
8 of Coins/Pentacles
King of Coins/Pentacles

2 of Swords
4 of Swords
Knight of Swords
King of Swords

6 of Pentacles?

jmd  09 May 2004
6 Bastons/Wands ?

Dark Eyes  10 May 2004
I'm going with nine of wands, a person who will make a committment after quietly weighing up in his head the odds ...?

The card is from RWS...not Robin Wood.
Gaidheal is the closest in a way...but not with suit.....:)

jmd  10 May 2004
well, it has to be the 5 Swords! :D

gloria  10 May 2004
YES, JMD IS THE WINNER!!

The three faces of 5/Swords.
The antagonist who likes nothing better than to taunt, ridicule and embarrass.
The victim on the receiving end who turns away, head bowed with humiliation and shame.
And then the guy who refuses to have any of this c##p, and walks quietly away, head held high, and most importantly…..with his self-respect still intact.
It’s sheer coincidence that mercenary’s lit. clue was also 5/Swords.

Over to you jmd....looking forward to your clue. :)

jmd  10 May 2004
Thanks Gloria... and Gaidheal :)

...now to find a quick one-line quote before having to soon log-off...

Dark Eyes  10 May 2004
Yes jmd, please don't make us wait...
By the way, congrats on winning, well done !! ;)

hedgecub  10 May 2004
Ahh so that's the card!

Congratulations jmd for solving the mystery that had us all baffled!
Congratulations to Gaidheal for hitting on the bull if not the bullseye!

Gaidheal  10 May 2004
You're quite welcome jmd, and thank you hedgecub! :)
