XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

James Joyce
Chamber Music

Good Luck!

jmd  12 Jun 2004
Hermit ?

MattDouglas  12 Jun 2004
I was gonna guess the Hermit too, but since jmd beat me to it, and it does say "that HIGH unconsortable one", I'll go with...

The High Priestess.

Satori  12 Jun 2004
The Hermit

The High Priestess

Both excellent ideas for this one, however jmd is closer to being right.

jmd  12 Jun 2004
XII Hanged Man ?

Satori  12 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess

XII Hanged Man

Not Hanged Man, sorry, though that is an interesting take on the Hanged Man....

You were closer with The Hermit....which was going to be my choice for the clue at one point. But I'm not sure The Hermit would choose love to companion him....

Luminessence  12 Jun 2004
The Star?

Satori  12 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man

The Star

Interesting answer, however it is not The Star.

Luminessence  12 Jun 2004
How about the King of Cups?

Satori  12 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star

Ah....The King of Cups. Such a romantic man. Alas, not the lone, unconsortable one whom I have chosen. The King of Cups has his consort...

jmd was the closest so far by naming The Hermit....

jmd  12 Jun 2004
The FOOL !

Satori  12 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups

The Fool

jmd, I just reread the lines to the poem and how I wish I had chosen the Fool now! It really does fit, but it wasn't what I was thinking.....so if we were awarding points you'd get some for the guess, but, no....sadly, it isn't the card.

Glory lost...for the moment, but may...come again, should you find any soul to fellow, and in that finding, redeem this card.

jmd  12 Jun 2004
I'm not sensing into the way you are seeing the words, so fumble a little in the dark.

If I consider 'glory lost' and 'foes of scorn and wrath', and, as the last to fall, not any soul to 'follow his', and the height of the 'ancient nobleness' of the possible structure...

How about the Tower ?

MattDouglas  12 Jun 2004
I suppose the quote could describe the Lucifer mythos, once high but lost glory, etc... so I'll say...

The Devil.

Sillanza  12 Jun 2004
... sounds like Judgment to me.

Satori  13 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool

The Tower

Sorry, not The Tower.

Satori  13 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower

The Devil

Not the Devil, but not far from the answer......

Satori  13 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil

XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

Not Judgement either.

He uses Judgement though....

jmd  13 Jun 2004
how about VI the Lover ?

Satori  13 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil

VI The Lover.....

Nice try....but no.

I appreciate your diligence to this quest....

XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

jmd  13 Jun 2004
Last try for the day... and let others with other eyes see the card :)

How about the Chariot Rx ?

:)

MattDouglas  13 Jun 2004
If the Devil is not far, then how about ....

Death.

Satori  13 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil
The Lover

The Chariot
Death

Neither Death nor Chariot fill the bill...
It is not a summation of the divinatory aspect, but rather a description of the persona...

XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

Luminessence  13 Jun 2004
King of Swords?

Satori  13 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil
The Lover
The Chariot
Death

The King of Swords

I can see why you might answer thus, however it is not the King of Swords whom I seek.

The key to solving this is for me who knows to keep silent....

XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

MattDouglas  13 Jun 2004
Knows how to keep silent...

King of Cups.

He is the the middle of turbulent waters (foes in scorn and wrath), but manages to stay secure on high throne (Holding to ancient nobleness).

Luminessence  13 Jun 2004
All right, then continuing on the King theme, is it the King of Pentacles?

Satori  13 Jun 2004

Very good answer, and it applies to the answer that I would love to see posted (except for the water....). But the Cup bearing King you refer to sits high on my list of unsatisfactory prospects.

~Sorry Matt~Nice Try~Try Again~

Satori  13 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil
The Lover
The Chariot
Death
The King of Swords

The King of Pentacles

The King of Pentacles is much too grounded to be the one I seek.

Luminessence, pray tell why you think of kings?

XXI

MattDouglas  14 Jun 2004
King of Wands, then.

Sillanza  14 Jun 2004
... add Judgment to the list of "not its!"

Here's a way out-there guess:

9 of Wands?

jmd  14 Jun 2004
Page of Cups?

Satori  14 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil
The Lover
The Chariot
Death
The King of Swords
The King of Pentacles

The King of Wands

The King of Wands is a wonderful fellow, however he is not the One. The closest answers were Hermit and High Priestess.

XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

Dark Eyes  14 Jun 2004
Justice??

... Love would be his companion I guess, because he would act out of love I am sure... ??

Satori  14 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil
The Lover
The Chariot
Death
The King of Swords
The King of Pentacles
The King of Wands
Judgement

9 of Wands
Sillanza, thanks for catching the missing Judgement!
As for the 9 of Wands, I'm intrigued by this answer, however the real answer still sits hidden, waiting for enlightenment.

XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

Satori  14 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil
The Lover
The Chariot
Death
The King of Swords
The King of Pentacles
The King of Wands
Judgement
9 of Wands

Justice
Justice is a wonderful guess, but not it. Thank you Dark eyes, for trying to see the light....

XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

jmd  14 Jun 2004
Knight of Cups?

Satori  14 Jun 2004
The Hermit
The High Priestess
XII Hanged Man
The Star
The King of Cups
The Fool
The Tower
The Devil
The Lover
The Chariot
Death
The King of Swords
The King of Pentacles
The King of Wands
Judgement
9 of Wands
Justice

The Knight of Cups
Sorry, no.

Is it customary to give more clues than I am providing?

XXI

He who hath glory lost, nor hath

This is in line with the card in question, or at least one way to see love as his companion. It is not the only way, but a more obvious one.

jmd  14 Jun 2004
Strength ?

Dark Eyes  14 Jun 2004
Could it be the hierophant by any chance?? He is wise, noble and feels very deep love...

Hooray!!! Gypsy Spirit gets it!

My thinking was that the Hierophant/Pope is high, above mere men. He can be scornful of mere men, and also wrathful, like the old testament God. He sits on his throne high above his fellows, and because of his office is fairly unconsortable, tho he wears the emblem of his love, the High Priestess. Also he is companioned by his love of power, God, and sometimes, himself.

And so it is up to you Gypsy Spirit to bedevil the rest of us for a while.

Dark Eyes  14 Jun 2004
Why Thank you Elf !!!
That was a clever one, and a lot of thought went into it I can tell.

I enjoy hearing how others interpret the cards and find such wonderful literature to accompany them. It never ceases to amaze me how smart and inciteful everybody on this forum is.

Your replies are very complete and explanitory, most helpful as the game flows along.

Thank you again, I will retire to bed to consider my next game clue... Hope it is as good as yours was Elf..... :*
........... Thinking deeply now... thinking thinking thinking..

(Dark Eyes Gypsy spirit going off to bed to dream up a new clue.. Yawning seriously now...zzzzzzzzz....zzzzzzzz...zzzzzzzz..... snore ....snore)
.... will be back tomorrow.... y'all come back now y'hear ..... ;)

blackroseivy  15 Jun 2004
it's "The Lovers" card. The only one *I* see in it.

Satori  15 Jun 2004
sorry, this puzzle is solved.
Hierophant is the correct answer!
Thanks for playing tho....
Look for the next puzzle when Dark eyes posts....
