He who hath glory lost, nor hath
Found any soul to fellow his,
Among his foes in scorn and wrath
Holding to ancient nobleness,
That high unconsortable one-
His love is his companion.

I was gonna guess the Hermit too, but since jmd beat me to it, and it does say "that HIGH unconsortable one", I'll go with...
The High Priestess.

The Hermit
The High Priestess
Both excellent ideas for this one, however jmd is closer to being right.

Not Hanged Man, sorry, though that is an interesting take on the Hanged Man....
You were closer with The Hermit....which was going to be my choice for the clue at one point. But I'm not sure The Hermit would choose love to companion him....

Ah....The King of Cups. Such a romantic man. Alas, not the lone, unconsortable one whom I have chosen. The King of Cups has his consort...
jmd was the closest so far by naming The Hermit....

The Fool
jmd, I just reread the lines to the poem and how I wish I had chosen the Fool now! It really does fit, but it wasn't what I was thinking.....so if we were awarding points you'd get some for the guess, but, no....sadly, it isn't the card.
Glory lost...for the moment, but may...come again, should you find any soul to fellow, and in that finding, redeem this card.

I'm not sensing into the way you are seeing the words, so fumble a little in the dark.
If I consider 'glory lost' and 'foes of scorn and wrath', and, as the last to fall, not any soul to 'follow his', and the height of the 'ancient nobleness' of the possible structure...
How about the Tower ?

I suppose the quote could describe the Lucifer mythos, once high but lost glory, etc... so I'll say...

Knows how to keep silent...
King of Cups.
He is the the middle of turbulent waters (foes in scorn and wrath), but manages to stay secure on high throne (Holding to ancient nobleness).

All right, then continuing on the King theme, is it the King of Pentacles?

Very good answer, and it applies to the answer that I would love to see posted (except for the water....). But the Cup bearing King you refer to sits high on my list of unsatisfactory prospects.

This is in line with the card in question, or at least one way to see love as his companion. It is not the only way, but a more obvious one.

Hooray!!! Gypsy Spirit gets it!
My thinking was that the Hierophant/Pope is high, above mere men. He can be scornful of mere men, and also wrathful, like the old testament God. He sits on his throne high above his fellows, and because of his office is fairly unconsortable, tho he wears the emblem of his love, the High Priestess. Also he is companioned by his love of power, God, and sometimes, himself.
And so it is up to you Gypsy Spirit to bedevil the rest of us for a while.

Why Thank you Elf !!!
That was a clever one, and a lot of thought went into it I can tell.
I enjoy hearing how others interpret the cards and find such wonderful literature to accompany them. It never ceases to amaze me how smart and inciteful everybody on this forum is.
Your replies are very complete and explanitory, most helpful as the game flows along.
Thank you again, I will retire to bed to consider my next game clue... Hope it is as good as yours was Elf..... :*
