Okay, here goes, one of my favorite poems:
Kindness
Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,
you must travel where the Mayan in a muddy poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.
Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread, only kindness that raises it head
from the crowd of the world to say,
“It is I you have been looking for,”
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

(the actual card that brought this to mind is one of the adorable Baroque Bohemian Cats.......... :D if you want to look at them, they are here: http://www.bohemian-cats.com/ )

The cats were very charming.
I say, The Emporer.
Because to rule fairly a certain amount of kindness should be used, and a ruler really does need to understand the whole range of experiences her subjects go thru.
Well, maybe that is in my world, not the real world.....

Going into the depths and dissolving in order to find the gold afterwards. Sounds like...
The Moon.

Facing the darker things in life so that you can leave them behind and experience happiness... I'd say Judgment.

No and no, but I did ponder the 5 of Pentacles for this poem. The 5 of Pents and Luminessence' comment about "facing the darker things in life so that you can leave them behind and experience happiness... " are the closest so far.

AND ELF SCORES AGAIN!!!!!! Good going, Elf! Yep, that is what I was thinking of, you can see the card here, click on her to see her larger:

I was sure Karen had posted an even larger version in her journal but I can't find it right now. There was just something about this cat's sad little face and the path extending out in front of her reminded me of the sense of loss and sorrow in the poem, the need to put sorrow behind one and go out into the world, even though we know "how desolate the landscape can be between the regions of kindness".
Over to you, Elf! :D

Whew....tomorrow is both mine and my husband's birthday, and a family day, so I will be a little occupied.
I will try to at least post something tonight, but if I don't I promise it will be up Sunday!
Thanks Dakota!
Great poem by the way. I really enjoyed it. And yes, that little kitty looked very pensive. Nice cards.

Well, then, let me be the first to say,
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ELF!!"
How wonderful that you married a man with the same birthday! Is it the same year too? Amazing........... :D
