Dog and Butterfly
- by Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart)

There I was with the old man
Stranded again so off I'd ran
A young world crashing around me
No possibilities of getting what I need
He looked at me and smiled
Said "No, no, no, no, no child.

See the dog and butterfly. Up in the
Air he like to fly." Dog and butterfly
Below she had to try. She roll back down
To the warm soft ground laughing
She don't know why, she don't know why
Dog and butterfly

Well I stumbled upon your secret place
Safe in the trees you had tears on your face
Wrestling with your desires frozen strangers
Stealing your fires. The message hit my mind
Only words that I could find

See the dog and butterfly
Up in the air he like to fly
Dog and butterfly below she had to try
She roll back down to the warm soft ground
Laughing to the sky, up to the sky
Dog and butterfly

We're getting older the world's getting colder
For the life of me I don't know the reason why
Maybe it's livin' making us give in
Hearts rolling in taken back on the tide
We're balanced together ocean upon the sky

Another night in this strange town
Moonlight holding me light as down
Voice of confusion inside of me
Just begging to go back where I'm free
Feels like I'm through
Then the old man's words are true

See the dog and butterfly
Up in the air he like to fly
Dog and butterfly, below she had to try
She roll back down to the warm soft
Ground with a little tear in her eye
She had to try, she had to try
Dog and butterfly
yeah
Up in the air, he liked to fly
The dog and butterfly, below she had to try
She rolled back down to the warm soft ground
Laughing she don’t know why
But she had to try she had to try
Dog and butterfly

9 of wands

because the dog kept trying in spite of previous failures

The Star

No, the card I'm thinking of here is neither the 9 of Wands nor the Star. Although I can see your reasonings for these choices.

Keep trying!

Judgement?

8 of Wands?

xviiirkna  06 Sep 2004
no, sorry - it's not Judgment or the Eight of Wands.

The Moon

the hermit

The image that immediately came to mind was The Fool.

No - still not the card I see in the message of this song, although the Fool fits the pure naiveté of the dog and by way of allusion, the storyteller - and the Hermit is definitely the old man. I think the key for me is in the middle of the song...if that helps.

Guessed so far:

Nine of Wands
Star
Judgment
Eight of Wands
The Moon
The Hermit
The Fool

Great answers - but keep trying! :)

makes me think of the two of wands... I could imagine him thinking all the things in the middle of the song... Can't see dog and butterfly, though- but maybe they're just out of sight of the card ;)

One of the things Temperance teaches us is how to balance what we desire with what we need. Giving harmonious equillibrium to things which might have otherwise appeared incongruous.

The dog dreams to fly and TRIES with all of her heart, but when she rolls back down to the warm soft ground she's happy and satisfied to be where she belongs and that by daring an attempt to soar like the butterfly, she was successful...if only in her soul.

Temperance might not be as clearly seen there - as mentioned earlier with the answer of the Fool, the dog is not aware that it "can't" fly...therefore has no reason to hold back from trying. but the message I find in the song rings clearly in this passage:
-----
Maybe it's livin' making us give in
Hearts rolling in taken back on the tide
We're balanced together ocean upon the sky
-----
Yet coming to terms with compromise should never make us give up on our dreams.

That's my take though - obviously there's lots of symbolism in the song...probably why it's always been one of my favorites. ;)

OK Raeven - you're next!

Blessings,

Yay!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I didn't think I'd win. Sorry I've taken so long to get back to this- didn't even know I'd got it! The new Lala Lyric should be up in half an hour.
