Lit Clue--September 24

From The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Perhaps, and I think this more as I grow older, what we speak of as time passing happens only because we have made it a habit, in our very blood and bones, to count things--the fingers of a newborn child, the rising and returning of the sun, we think so often of how many days must pass or how many seasons before our corn will ripen or our child grow in the womb and come to birth or some longed-for meeting take place; and we watch these by the turning of the year and the sun, as the first of the priestly secrets. Within the fairy country I knew nothing of the passing of time, and so for me it did not pass. For when I came out of the country I found that already there were more lines in Gwenhyfar's face, and Elaine's exquisite youthfulness had begun to blur a little; but my own hands were no thinner, my face was untouched by line or wrinkle, and though in our family white comes early to the hair--in his nineteenth year Lancelet had had already a few grey strands--my hair was black and untouched by time as the wing of a crow.

Peace,
Arcana

You'd think it would be obvious: The High Priestess. Of course, I'm probably wrong!

I seriously considered using the High Priestess for this passage. But ultimately I decided upon something else. But you are definately in the right frame of mind!

[empress was going to be my next suggestion if the wheel was incorrect - i was tossing between these two for a while, but the wheel came out on top when considering the golden tarot] :)

a hint; maybe?

arcanalefait  28 Sep 2004
Sorry so late in replying--my son was in the hospital this weekend.

No one has guessed it so far. This may be too much of a hint, but the whole passage seems to say that time is an illusion.

The Tower?

The Moon? [in triple aspect maiden, mother, crone as reflectin the passing of time, and also the association of the moon with illusions].

I think that The Moon is probably right, but just in case it isn't: The Hermit. (The Hermit is actually Old Father Time, as us Tarot scholars know!)

Kwaw got it! The Moon!

I always see so much mystery and illusion in that passage--it makes me think right away of the Moon. I considered using the High Priestess instead, but it was just the Moon to me.

On to you, Kwaw!
