Sorry for the delay, a bit stuck on this one a still not sure about this one, but I've delayed long enough and somethings better than nothing. Decided to stick with Pratchets disc world, in the 'Hogfather' Death assumes the role of the Hogfather [a discworld version of father christmas]:
Death threw the sack into the back of the sledge and climbed in after it.
"You're doing well, Master." said Albert.
THIS CUSHION IS STILL UNCOMFORTABLE, said Death, hitching his belt. I AM NOT USED TO A BIG FAT STOMACH.
'Just a stomach's the best I could do, master. You're starting off with a handicap, sort of thing.'
Albert unscrewed the top off a bottle of cold tea. All the sherry had made him thirsty.
'Doing well, master,' he repeated, taking a pull. 'All the soot in the fireplace, the footprints, them swigged sherries, the sleigh tracks all over the roofs.......it's got to work.'
YOU THINK SO?
'Sure'.
AND I MADE SURE SOME THEM SAW ME. I KNOW IF THEY ARE PEEPING, Death added proudly.
'Well done, sir.'
YES
'Though here's a tip, though. Just "Ho.Ho.Ho." will do. Don't say "Cower, brief mortals" unless you want them to grow up to be moneylenders or some such.'
HO.HO.HO.

The Chariot- Death being somewhat out of his element, yet taking the reigns and getting the job done.
I love Terry Pratchett!!!!!!

Page of Swords?
Hi Oakdragon
You don't mention why, I am thinking the presence of Albert, the servant/butler of Death [hence albert page of swords to death knight of swords]? Or even possibly Death itself, assuming service for another [hogfather] ergo from Knight to Page?

I like it. A somewhat different angle to the one I've taken.

Close, in more than one way, to my way of thinking of this. The element of disguise is certainly a factor in the asscciative pathway I have taken.
Cards so far suggested:
Page of Swords
Chariot
Moon

7 of cups - I know this card is normally about choices but I also see it as representing illusions and Santa's bag of toys.

I was thinking about him being a student of sorts, learning a new trade, a new way of thinking.
Hmmm...

Hmmm... Maria and Oakdragon took what I would have chosen for a *disguise* card.
I suppose I will choose Queen of Swords for my next guess. One who seems cold and unapproachable but in reality has a quite developed understanding of human nature. One always veiled in mystery, mourning, etc..
I know it's a stretch but I had so very little left to work with!

Well....
The Fool...?
... could be said to be a talent in disguise... unknown potential. Only time will tell as to whether he ends up being more like his old self (Death) or fits into the role of the Hogfather?

Oakdragon has it!
The inversion of roles, the great Taker [death] assuming the role of the Giver, made me think of the Feast of Fools in which all roles are inverted, and by association the 'Fool'. Also the Feast of Fools is related to the Saturnalia, the midwinter celebration of the rebirth of the Sun, pre-cursor to Christmas, named after Saturn who with Death shares the emblematic symbol of the Scythe and is also associated with time and death. Thus through the feast of fools we have association with death, christmas and the assumption of other's roles.
The Fool also may be associated with 'disguise' in that because of the fools license to say and do what others couldn't, the character of the fool in literature and plays was often the foil or guise of truth and wisdom.
Over to you Oakdragon, well done.

Oh, wow. I just noticed this. I haven't been around here as much lately. Might be Saturday before I can post something. I'll post as soon as I can, though.
