Sorry it took so long. I always have such trouble with this!

This is a poem by Maya Angelou:

On Diverse Deviations

When love is a shimmering curtain
Before a door of chance
That leads to a world in question
Wherein the macabrous dance
Of bones that rattle in silence
Of blinded eyes and rolls
Of thick lips thin, denying
A thousand powdered moles,
Where touch to touch is feel
And life a weary whore
I would be carried off, not gently
To a shore,
Where love is the scream of anguish
And no curtain drapes the door.

Have fun!

Is it the Three of Swords??

MattDouglas  14 Mar 2005
I'll try the 9 of swords.

arcanalefait  14 Mar 2005
Sorry, neither of those!

Milamber  15 Mar 2005
The High Priestess?

bassetized  15 Mar 2005
The Moon?

arcanalefait  15 Mar 2005
Not yet!

I considered the Moon for this card, actually. But I decided to go with something else. I'm really considering the speaker.

Milamber  15 Mar 2005
The Wheel?

arcanalefait  15 Mar 2005
Keep guessing!

AmyV  15 Mar 2005
Is it Justice?

ncefafn  15 Mar 2005
Death?

Milamber  15 Mar 2005
Ten of Swords?

arcanalefait  15 Mar 2005
No...hmmm...

I'm really thinking about what the speaker is willing to do.

arcanalefait  16 Mar 2005
Uh oh! Don't give up! Should I give another clue?

peridot  16 Mar 2005
good poem. I'm not sure if I'm understanding her the way she means but I'm thinking The Hanged Man?

Milamber  16 Mar 2005
The Lovers?

Pipistrelle  16 Mar 2005
Well, I picked out 4 cards that I thought it could be...then realised that two had already been offered and rejected so....

The Devil?

(and if that's wrong, I'll try the next one!)

MattDouglas  16 Mar 2005
It sounds like the speaker doesn't give in easily...

so 7 of Wands.

AmyV  16 Mar 2005
6 of Swords?

arcanalefait  17 Mar 2005
OK...maybe if I say what the poem means to me it will help. Guessed so far:

3 of swords
9 of swords
highpriestess
moon
wheel
justice
death
10 of swords
hanged man
lovers devil
7 of wands
6 of swords

I think the poet is saying that she would rather face the risk of pain by diving into "real" love, rather than staying reserved and dealing with pretenses.

Hope that helps! Sorry this was so hard!

arcanalefait  17 Mar 2005
Sorry if I sent that twice--I'm having technical difficulties.

Lady Mary  17 Mar 2005
2 of Swords?

Ulfdis  18 Mar 2005
Queen of Cups?

Pipistrelle  18 Mar 2005
Knight of Cups

Milamber  18 Mar 2005
Two of Wands?

WhiteRaven  18 Mar 2005
8 of Swords

peridot  18 Mar 2005
The Fool??

arcanalefait  18 Mar 2005
Yes!!!!! The Fool! Peridot gets it!

To me, it seemed like the speaker was willing to risk herself in order to fully experience love--very Fool sounding!

On to you, Peridot!

peridot  18 Mar 2005
wow! ok cool. Your interpretation really helped. I must admit though I didn't really expect to get it correct so I don't have a poem just now. I can get one it will just take me a bit. If no one minds. Do I post a new thread or just continue on with this one? I'm new to this thanks for your patience.

peridot  18 Mar 2005
Ok, I think I can answer my own question here - I decided to look up the rules...what a novel idea:) So I think I'm supposed to start a new thread with same title different date. I'll do that a bit later. Thanks. this is fun.
