Ok, here's my crack at it:

This is a work by Carl Sandburg

A Fence

Now the stone house on the lake front is finished and the workmen are beginning the fence.

The palings are made of iron bars with steel points that can stab the life out of any man who falls on them.

As a fence, it is a masterpiece, and will shut off the rabble and all vagabonds and hungry men and all wandering children looking for a place to play.

Passing through the bars and over the steel points will go nothing except Death and the rain and To-morrow

Four of Pentacles?

peridot  18 Mar 2005
No, sorry, not the one I was thinking but I can see that too.

Ulfdis  19 Mar 2005
Death?

peridot  19 Mar 2005
nope. not death.

ncefafn  19 Mar 2005
Mmm, okay. How about the Five of Pentacles?

aaquwaa  19 Mar 2005
7 of wands?

Rowan O  19 Mar 2005
10 of swords?

peridot  19 Mar 2005
No sorry, none of those - I was thinking why one might build this masterpiece and the card itself contains a visual.

oops - I'm using the Universal Rider Waite deck

AmyV  19 Mar 2005
8 of Swords?

peridot  19 Mar 2005
No, AmyV, but good guess.

ncefafn  19 Mar 2005
Nine of Wands?

peridot  19 Mar 2005
No not that one either.

peridot  20 Mar 2005
shall I give a hint? :)

Lady Mary  20 Mar 2005
The Emperor?

peridot  20 Mar 2005
No, I’m sorry. Not the Emperor.

I find that some books interpret cards very differently from others. I for the most part rely on Rachel Pollack’s Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom and Joan Bunning’s Learning the Tarot. – just so you know where I’m coming from.

I'm still learning the cards so I've been looking your guesses up and thinking hmmm... that could fit too. :) but not what I was thinking about.

Here are the guesses so far:
4 of Pents
Death
5 of Pents
7 of Wands
10 of Swords
8 of Swords
9 of Wands
The Emperor

Ok, here’s a hint: the fence is made of steel and iron same as a…

Sword...?

Two of Swords? (She's on a lakefront too!)

peridot  21 Mar 2005
Yes!!! You got it. Right on AmyV! :)

My interpretation of this card is that the fence is being built to keep the reality of what’s going on around her out. And the fence keeps her emotions in. She seems to be deliberately avoiding caring for or involving herself with other people. She thinks that by letting nothing get close to her, nothing will penetrate her. The fence also represents hostility and her readiness to lash out if need be with a sword. No matter how hard we try to avoid the truth and protect ourselves from the world or emotions or burglars :), we cannot escape death or the inevitable. The house behind bars - the woman behind swords. The moon and sun will continue to set and rise around her. The image of her being blindfolded sitting on stone at a waterfront under the moon and behind swords made me think this would be a good card for this poem.

- On to you AmyV!!!

That was so much fun. Thanks everyone!

AmyV  22 Mar 2005
I see this card just the same, it's one I find particularly strong, I think because it portrays the situation so heartbreakingly well.

Hmmm, so me again - I'll see what I can come up with......... :) :WL
