What card am I? Lit. Clue - Mar. 9

Milamber  09 Mar 2005
From Dragons of Spring Dawning, by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, p. 369 Wizards paperback edition.

Quote:
"It is red like the fires of his forge," the old man said, gazing at it. "It is red like the sparks that fly from his hammer as it shapes the molten world resting on his anvil. Beside the forge of Reorx is a tree of suprassing beauty, the like of which no living being has ever seen. Beneath that tree sits a grumbling old dwarf, relaxing after many labors. A mug of cold ale stands beside him, the fire of the forge is warm upon his bones. He spends all day lounging beneath the tree, carving and shaping the wood he loves. And every day someone who comes past that beautiful tree starts to sit down beside him.

"Looking at them in disgust, the dwarf glowers at them so sternly that they quickly get to their feet again.

"'This place is saved,' the dwarf grumbles. 'There's a lame-brained doorknob of a kender off adventuring somewhere, getting himself and those unfortunate enough to be with him into no end of trouble. Mark my words. One day he'll show up here and he'll admire my tree and he'll say, "Flint, I'm tired. I think I'll rest awhile here with you." Then he'll sit down and he'll say, "Flint, have you heard about my latest adventure? Well, there was this black-robed wizard and his brother and me and we went on a journey through time and the most wonderful things happened--" and I'll have to listen to some wild tale,' and so he grumbles on. Those who would sit beneath the tree hide their smiles and leave him in peace."
I apologize for it being a long one.

Is it the King of Wands?

Lurea  09 Mar 2005
How about the Four of Wands?

ncefafn  09 Mar 2005
Knight of Pentacles?

Milamber  09 Mar 2005
Nothing yet. ;)

bassetized  09 Mar 2005
8 of Pentacles?

MattDouglas  09 Mar 2005
Four of pentacles!
Flint souds as grumpy as the guy on the card looks.

ncefafn  09 Mar 2005
I betcha Matt's got it. If not, how about the Seven of Pentacles?

Kim

Milamber  10 Mar 2005
Actually, nobody's got it yet. Hadn't thought of the 4/Pents though -- I was actually sifting through my Gilded when choosing a card.

Guessed:

K/Wands
4/Wands
N/Pents
8/Pents
4/Pents
7/Pents

arcanalefait  10 Mar 2005
Love that book, Milamber--and all of the Dragonlance series.

But I'm stumped. This is a wild guess...Temperance?

AmyV  10 Mar 2005
What about the Emperor? He looks like a bit of a grouch :)

huredriel  10 Mar 2005
4 swords?

Milamber  10 Mar 2005
I guess I picked a passage with too much distracting material. I felt it needed that much for context, I hope it got the context I wanted.

Let me throw out a hint: It's not about how grouchy Flint is. ;) It's actually more about the kender he's waiting for.

Already guessed:

K/Wands
4/Wands
N/Pents
8/Pents
4/Pents
7/Pents
Temperance
Emperor
4/Swords

ncefafn  10 Mar 2005
The Fool

Pipistrelle  10 Mar 2005
4 of Cups

Milamber  10 Mar 2005
Sorry, not yet, but I can't believe I hadn't thought of the 4 of Cups . . . it does make sense, doesn't it? :)

K/Wands
4/Wands
N/Pents
8/Pents
4/Pents
7/Pents
Temperance
Emperor
4/Swords
Fool
4/Cups

ncefafn  10 Mar 2005
The Happy Squirrel!

Milamber  10 Mar 2005
?_?

I'll add a bit -- this comes before the entry I chose. If nobody gets it soon, I'll just give it to the 4 of Cups or some such. I didn't think I'd made this too hard, but I suppose it'd have been a lot easier for someone who had read the whole series, and seen it similarily to me.

Again, this comes directly before the original entry. I made a slight edit in square brackets for clarity.

Quote:
"I knew it!" Tas groaned, flinging himself to the ground. " [you're a] god! I've lost everyone! Everyone!" He began to weep bitterly.

The old man regarded him fondly for a moment, even brushing a gnarled hand across his own moist eyes. Then he knelt down beside the kender and put his arm around him comfortingly. "Look, my boy," he said, putting his finger beneath Tas's chin and turning his eyes to heaven, "do you see the red star that shines above us? Do you know to what god that star is sacred?"

"Reorx," Tas said in a small voice, choking on his tears.
Finally, I'll add that the final paragraph in the original post was the real source of the reason I chose the card I did. The rest was context, so you could tell what was going on.

Ulfdis  11 Mar 2005
Page of Cups?

MattDouglas  11 Mar 2005
Two of wands.

He's waiting for someone to arrive.

ncefafn  11 Mar 2005
Erm, Five of Cups? (I'm guessing that The Happy Squirrel was not it.)

Kim

AmyV  11 Mar 2005
Knight of Wands?

Milamber  11 Mar 2005
I'm afraid that I don't even know "The Happy Squirrel," so no. ;)

K/Wands
4/Wands
N/Pents
8/Pents
4/Pents
7/Pents
Temperance
Emperor
4/Swords
Fool
4/Cups
P/Cups
2/Wands
5/Cups
N/Wands

4/Wands is the closest yet in symbolism to the card I chose, and then maybe 2/Wands. 4/Cups is somewhat close as well. The card is minor arcana, and not a court card.

arcanalefait  11 Mar 2005
Oh! 6 of cups?

MattDouglas  11 Mar 2005
Then 3 of wands!

The ship seems closer to coming in.

Milamber  11 Mar 2005
Arcanalefait got it! You may start the next one whenever you're ready.

I chose the 6 of Cups because of the melancholy of the passage. Flint is waiting in the realm of the dead for his friend Tas to eventually make it there, and meanwhile remembering the sort of things Tas would do. The 6 of Cups is a card of the past and pleasant memories.

If I ever get one of these again, I promise to be clearer, and pick something shorter. ;)

One last thing. What is "The Happy Squirrel?" From a special tarot deck?

:)

The Happy Squirrel is from an episode of "The Simpsons." For more about it, go here. Congrats to Arcana!

I must have missed that episode! I'll have to ask my roommate--he has all the Simpsons on VHS.

I have to admit I got this more because of the clues than the passage...although once I got it I smacked myself in the head! Why didn't I think of that sooner? :)

I'll sift through my books and come up with something soon. (How about transcripts from SImpson's episodes? Just kidding!) :)
