If you have access to a Haindl deck, check out The Tower, especially the Rune in the upper right-hand corner.

For those of us who don't have that deck, would you mind telling us what the Rune is of? I'm intrigued....

I've written (emailed) U.S. Games for permission to post an image of the card. You really have to see it. I'll keep you posted (!) as to the progress of my inquiry. It shouldn't take too long...

According to my book, that symbol is for the Yew tree and the letter 'y' in some older alphabets and '-R' in futhark alphabets from the Viking age. These interpretations, of course, are open for debate since scholars don't really agree on what means what. This is taken from an interpretation of the Armanen Futhork:
"Woman-rune, instinct, greed, passion, matter, delusion, confusion, death, destruction, the negative feminine principle in the cosmos, night consciousness."
Mind you, I'm sure there's a reason why this particular symbol is chosen for the Tower card. It's probably a good idea not to read too much into it since rune meanings and theory are highly debated.

Elphaba,
You are right, there are many opinions on the meaning of the runes. I may be wrong, but I don’t think the Haindl Tarot uses the Armenian futhork. I don't have my Haindl Tarot book with me. However, in the elder futhark, this rune represents an elk and means protection when it is upright ("clear stave" is a better term). "Murk stave" (reversed or not displayed well with the other runes), the meaning could be: hidden danger, loss of protection, loss of divine link, or vulnerability. If I were putting runes on tarot cards, this is probably the rune I would pick since the meaning does closely match the meaning to the Tower. It is surprising that it looks like an airplane.

I've looked up the definition in the book "The Haindl Tarot": This rune tells us we have followed a wrong path.....This rune has a special meaning. It forms the symbol of the international peace movement. The rune implies an opposition to the Tower....... The rune evokes the values of peace (traditionally associated with woman).
As for the Hebrew letter found to the left of the card: Peh means speech, communication. Speech in this case means God speaking directly to humanity.

Super interesting in light of last week's event, wouldn't you say?

Do not own the Haindl deck ,it's not even on my wish list. And I haven't looked at the picture of the rune or noticed it yet either BUT I have a book with illustrations of the haindl tarot. I felt quite drawn to the tower card and considered getting the deck , but didn't want to just for one card! This was a number of months ago. I was Really was intrigued by only it's tower card , and this interesting thread on it sure has me thinking!

A lot of tower cards now give me the shivers! And I did go see the rune. Well , it sure does look like a plane! I personally have a feeling that whomever invented the tarot SAW the tower. If they foresaw a real event , then did materialism (the devil) come before ? And what is to come after? The star and all the cards after are celestial...........
