Two and Three of Wands

Mermaid  30 May 2002
I have always been a bit confused about the differences between the 2 and 3 of wands.

The problem for me is that in the RW deck I read with, the pictures on these two cards are so similar that it is hard for me to work out any great difference in their meanings when I read from my deck. All the RW shows is a man holding a globe standing between two poles in 2W, and a man with his back towards you between 3 poles in 3W.

Could someone help me work this one out! What do the 2W and 3W mean to you? (& which deck do you use?)

Blessings!

Hi Mermaid.
I knew I'd seen a post about the exact same problem, so I went searching for it. Found it! :D I've bumped it up for you. I think you'll see which one it is. :P

With the 2 of Wands, you stand at the threshold of a decision (“Which stick do I use?”), it is the early stage of an enterprise.

The 3 of wands, the guy stands looking out for the return of emissaries he had sent out prior. So it is more about progress, expanding horizons, keeping your eye on goals, something coming back…

That’s my take.

Hi all,
The easiest way for me to understand the difference between the 2 and 3 of wands is to put it in the context of starting a new business. To me the 2 of wands is the stage where you are doing all the hard work to get the new business ready to open. You have to get a building, room or someplace for your business. You have to get furniture and supplies. You are doing all this hard work but the store isn’t open yet. Now, with the 3 of wands, you have opened the store for business! Your first customers have come in and things seem to be a success! You are starting to see some profit for the first time. This idea works for me.

raeanne: that's a great explanation! :D I'll remember the difference between the two cards for certain now. Do you have more? :)

Thanks for your replies guys, I kind of get the difference now. One more question though - in the Thoth deck (which I don't use myself), the 2W is called dominion and the 3W is virtue. Does anyone know why those titles are so different to the RW meanings of the cards?

I don't think its that different from what you *see* when you look at the RW deck...if you look at the 2W you see the man standing in a castle holding the world in his hands...success with control...or everything under his dominion.

3's are the synthesis of Aces (energy, beginnings) and Twos (balance, union) a wand matured through the Ace and Two becomes accomplishment, success with maturity...webster's defines virtue "A particularly efficacious, good, or beneficial quality; advantage"...doesn't the RW 3W look virtuous?

Just my two cents :)
(clearly once I got out of lurk, it's going to be hard to get me to shut up LOL)

Hmmm, I see where you're coming from Shell. (Pleased to meet you BTW, it's always nice to meet an ex-lurker! :))

But those titles still don't seem to really match up for me. I mean, 2W doesn't really seem to be about domination as such, it's more the potential for domination or success.

And I like the description 'success with maturity' for the meaning of 3W - but I wouldn't call that idea 'virtue'. A virtuous person is a good person, but not necessarily a successful or established one.

I didn't say they were ideal definitions...just trying to show them from a different angle LOL. Semantics can cause a lot of misunderstandings and I tend to discard (in my mind anyway) any keywords with decks I can't resonate with. Not to beat a dead horse, but the keyword on the 2 isn't "domination" but dominion, correct? He is holding the whole world in his hands...his dominion. And it depends on where the 2 falls as to whether there it is potential or if it is present. It may even point to dissatisfaction...fire wants to be active...if you've already succeeded boredom could set in, or the world you find yourself holding may be quite small...

The 3 and Virtue...again not virtuous per se...I don't know, I think I've stretched that one as far as I can with the quote from Webster LOL. And this is why I ignore the keywords that don't resonate and just ask the cards what they are trying to tell me LOL

I ordered the book "Tarot as Your Companion..." (can't remember the rest of the title but hits RW and Thoth I think) which may give me a little more insight...I'll let you know if I have any big revelations. With Mercury retrograde, it is taking even longer to receive my shipments here in the middle of the Pacific (sigh), so maybe in another week or so when it goes direct I'll have an entire new library in my mailbox LOL.

when the three of wand show in the spread the person wants to recieve a phone call from another. Try interpreting it that way. say" wow. it seems like you are wanting to here from some one" The person you aread for will go" Oh yes Oh yes.he/she never calls me.......yadda yaddda yadda"
The two of wands is not good. Usually it means some one is jealous and they are worried about their boyfriend/ girlfriend dating someone else.

Hehe, I know where you're coming from! Those keywords could get mighty frustrating if they don't match up with the meanings that you are used to reading with.

Thanks for offering to share some of the info from your lovely new tarot books, any insights you care to share would be appreciated!

Blessings
