What is the difference in the interpretation of the 3 of pents and the 8 of pents?

3s are abundance, growth, creativity and preparing to take action of sorts.
8s are setting priorities, regeneration - rebirth - reevaluating.
The 8 of Pentacles :T8P is the novice (an apprentice if you will) and the 3 of Pentacles :T3P is the expert/master.

Great explanation, Starfish!
Also, the 3 sometimes has to do with committee work and changing the work to suit inner or outer critics. The 8 is more involved with solitary workers.

in the 3 of pentacles your social skills are as important as your professional skills, if not more important!. it is about getting along in a competative emviroment, of functioning in a group and working to reach a common goal. it could be a family who needs to work together to mend the structures (setting routines, making clear-cut rules, working out emotional problems) as well as working on actual physical things.
the 8 of pentacles is someone devoting himself to his profession. he is concerned with the bettering of himself and is quite isolated in doing so. he needs to cope on his own, making sure not to slack off just cause no one is watching. it is a lot about sticking to it, perfecting something or at least striving towards that goal.
*i used to have all this written in a file on the computer - now i just have my memory...*

generally 3 and 8 are numbers with different "characters", 3's are cards when things are starting to move, a third factor breaks the frozen situation between the two, developement and evolvement.
8's are slow cards, when you are stuck in place, something is holding you back and it would take some time until things start moving and you would see a progress and result.

I had the three of pentacles once in a meaning, that a person is within a relationship and does not work on it, because he had another relationship. his wife was the one standing on the ground, with him, while the querent was the one working, but without his assistance. it fit perfectly. but I admit, this will not oo often be the meaning of this card.
