I am a gushing newcomer...so please excuse my boundless enthusiasm!!!
I had a rough weekend...I did a set at a Hafla (Middle Eastern Dance Party) and I sucked...ok...wasn't THAT bad...but it wasn't up to my standards...
I gave myself a reading, asking if I should quit dancing...the cards were AMAZING...they spoke of my early days as a dancer (back in my youth!) and how I was being too tough on myself now...the future showed nothing but endless possibilities...
My husband...a HUGE nay-sayer even asked for his SECOND reading!!!!!! And he was QUITE pleased with the result!!!!
I'm still just using the past, present, future spread...haven't delved into deeper territory...
Any suggestions about my next course of 'study'? Is there another spread I should try? (not too keen on the CC...)
I'm also kind of murky on the relevance of the earth 'symbols' (earth, water, fire etc) to each of the M.A. cards???

Hi Gia,
I'm a belly dancing Tarot reader, too! What fun! And I'm also in a time of not knowing whether or not to continue dancing...but I guess that's best kept for another thread or a pm (which I couldn't pm you).
Welcome!

My advice would be to stick with the 3 card spread. There are loads of variations you could use if you get sick of Past, Present, Future.
I tend to use 3 card spreads with the occasional 5 card spread:
1. Past
2. Present
3. Hidden / unconcious influences
4. Advice
5. Future
If you do a search for `Celtic Cross` you`ll find loads of threads with alternate spreads in them. There are a lot of people here who really don`t rate the Celtic Cross, especially for beginners.
Love and light

Hi Gia! Welcome to Aeclectic Tarot.
As for spreads - I had started out trying to learn the Celtic Cross... believe me, you're definitely better off sticking with someting simpler till you feel you're ready for a such complex spread. As you may have noticed there are a lot of people who slightly dislike the CC... ;)
Crystal Minx had a good suggestion on a 5-card spread. I might add that you can also expand your usual 3-card (past-present-future) spread by adding cards at either end to look further into the past or future;
1....2....3....4....5
1) past
2) more recent past
3) present
4) near future
5) future
I have expanded this to 7 cards. I have also, a couple of times, added a 6th (or 8th) card directly below the "present" card as an "advice" position when the querrent is asking a question which seems to warrant it (this gives you a layout that looks like a balanced "teeter-totter" - balancing the past with the future).
With 3-card layouts you can also change from simple past-present-future by changing the meanings of the positions;
1....2....3
1) mind (emotions/psyche)
2) body (physical health)
3) spirit (spiritual "place")
or
1) problem
2) blockage / opposition
3) advice
I also do a 3-card daily "pyramid" (I place the #2 card above and between the other two to achieve the proper shape);
1) beginning of day
2) peak or main theme for the day
3) ending of the day
Hope this helps... heck, I hope I answered the question you were actually asking... ;)

Oh Gia! You don't have to go into lurk mode. Please don't worry about your post being moved. All of us at one point or another have had to have a post moved to a different forum. It's not a personal comment.
At any rate, I hope you got some of the answers you wanted. so please don't be shy about posting!

Welcome Gia. Yes, please don't feel put off or uncomfortable. Posts get moved about all the time, to where they will best fit in with related material. You are doing just fine.
Personally, I'm really interested in hearing more about hat-dancing, but that would fit in "chat" :)

Hi Gia, love your name :)
my favourite five card spread, that I also have found always is uncannily accurate and really picks up the situation in question, is the horseshoe:
1....2....3.....4.....5
1 - your present position
2 - your present expectations
3 - what is not expected
4 - immediate future
5 - longer term future
(I personally prefer the expression 'influences' instead of future, as a simple change of mind can change a future ....for a while :))
I have also found that laying one card on top of each position can clarify the insights further.
Anyway, nice to meet you :D

Gia! I've got to echo my friend Diana. I seem to recall not just having my posts moved - but having to move my own posts! LOL
Diana? Couldn't we talk about using tarot cards for spells too? })

Like the others have already said - don't go lurking on us, just because of a misplaced post, we ALL do that from time to time. It's not really that big a deal, since we have our wonderful moderators who are kind enough to keep track of everything for us...! :D
I also have to tell you how your enthusiasm made my heart jump, gosh - don't we all remember what it was like, when we had THOSE readings that were just so right on the spot.
I know at one point I did a reading (based in a very low confidence of course) on whether I should stick with the Tarot, I thought for some reason that maybe the tarot wasn't for me at all. Oh boy, I have never seen such a vast range of strong, spiritual majors in one reading, not before and not after that one. There was no misunderstanding the message of that reading! I was "high" on that reading for a WEEK!! (Yes, high - it's the best expression I can think of, because that's what it is!) And you wanna know the REALLY awsome part? That isn't just in the beginning, those readings will keep coming, when you really need them you WILL always get the strongest readings, I swear!
Oh, btw, maybe I should mention your question as well here...
I LOVE 3-carders. Simply love'em! You can vary them endlessly - Trogon mentioned my favourite among many: body - mind - spirit. But there are tons more, and when you've run out of positions the three-card-spread is also ideal for just laying out cards and listen to them tell their story. Often the three is enough to get a general idea, and then you can always draw clarification cards if something seems not to make sense. Spreads without positions is a great way to let go and learn to listen to the cards. Tricky but rewarding!
So my advice is to keep playing with the three-card-spreads, there are so much that you can do with just them three cards, if you're comfortable with that spread you certainly don't have to worry about limiting yourself by sticking to it!
Please, don't stop sharing your enthusiasm with us! Please, come out, come out, whereever you are...!
Light and love,
Jenny :)
