hey people thanks for advice on the deck, am slowly learning the art of tarrot reading, just wondering how a reading is done with only the 22major cards. the H.R. Giger deck is stunning very dark, does anybody have this deck, what sort of readings does it give?

and the dore themed deck would be stunning think it would really lend its self to a tarrot deck. well a deck that would draw me to it!!

Reading with 22 or with 78 cards is pretty much the same thing, except for the quantity of cards used. Just take your deck, shuffle it and proceed with the desired spread - it's as simple as that! Seriously speaking, it's no difference at all.

Maan  11 Dec 2002
I had the giger but i never dared to do a reading with it. The cards were just a little to dark for me....so i trade it away.
About reading with 22 cards it feels like working with an oracle for me and i can't get the same depth in a reading as i have when i read with 78

will i get a more vague reading from a 22card deck, what are its advatages/ disadvantages. thanks

within the last month there has been a thread about the virtues of reading with 22 or 78 on this forum, try doing a search.

I actually think you'll get a strong theme reading, kind of like wham-wham-wham if you focus on what each archetype could mean. It depends on your favored tarot deck that you pick. For example If you had a specific question and say a past-present-future spread:
What do I need to get this certain job and say, you drew:

Death Lovers Hanged Man

In general, if you were using a book or little white booklet with general meanings, the text might say: Death--There's a transformation that happened or you may have found a need for a complete new change of self or circumstance or mindset. Lovers--That means a coming together or a balance in yourself or circumstances that is usually favorable---in terms of this certain job, there's a strong appeal and positive attitude in your heart toward this path. Hanged Man--there might be a sacrifice involved and you feel like you are left hanging or you might be having to wait awhile before the circumstance you envision that would be ideal does happen. That might be considered a vague reading if the tarot you choose has very simple pictures and the cards that you see aren't attractive to you.
If your chosen tarot has very strong pictures that also tell you in a book about the scene elements, or the pictures are vividly appealing or like a story page to you without a book, then sometimes the majors-only is very powerful and on the spot. Say you were a Shakesphere fan and your Shakespheren tarot had the death card with a skull such as Hamlet's unearthing of Yorick skull, the Lovers were Romeo and Juliet and the Hanged Man also was a hero in one of the plays...maybe it would inspire you for the next three days to re-read the plays and come up with answers to apply to the job question. For a fan of the writings, it might be a very specific answer to help them explore answers for their wondering questions.
Just my take,
Mari H.

I don't have the Giger, but I have a 22-card deck called Ansata, and it'd classify as dark as well, I think.

For some reason, I only use it with a tree of life spread, the reasons being, like the other posters said, majors-only gives you the big picture, and doesn't bog you down with the details. Good for when you want an overview of things, and on open-ended questions....

Hi, Baron Brooks!

There are specific Majors only readings you can do - I think the first one I ever saw was in the book that accompanies the Spiral deck which was unfortunately in my car when it got stolen, but I've found the reading again in the Complete Book of Tarot Spreads by Evelin Burger & Johannes Fiebig - I can let you have more details if you want to try to find it.

The Spread is called The Cycle of the Year and there are variations. I'll just set out the first one here and see what you think:

I know my friend Major Tom will agree with me here: one do any spread one likes with only majors. And if you need any clarification, well you can use the remaining majors for clarification.

Indeed, there have been a few threads on this question in the Using Tarot forums. If I have time, I'll provide links to them. If I don't have time, and in the meantime, please go searching in the Using Tarot Forum.

Ahh, finds where your anxieties came from... :D I was lucky in not getting that *search for it first message*, but I know I have done the same thing... there is so much info here, that you are bound to bring up something someone already has. Ahh, well.. if I got upset everytime a student asked me something instead of searching for it first..they would call me quite a craggy teacher... *L*

As far as Majors Only, I am looking at wanting a majors only deck, The Portal, but I have never done a majors only reading... but it does look enrapturing..

I have used the majors only as a fool's journey outline for a plot of a novel to wonderful effect... Hope I have helped even a little

Peace!

lol...i didn't even know we had this function called "PM" until I was randomly pressing buttons around the page!

cuddles  19 Dec 2002
for some reason i usually seem to find the minors easier to understand in a spread. maybe because the meaning isn't so "major"? i'm not sure why it is. but often when i have a major in a position where the meaning doesn't seem to jive with the meaning of the position i have a hard time. hope that made sense...lol. if not, i'll have to wait until next time that happens to clarify with an example.

and my newbie thoughts on majors and minors in spreads is that having both helps you to know what messages are more important. if the card is a major, the cards are telling you that space needs more emphasis.

i read the threads about majors only though and will probably give it a try.

aaaaaand, there is a deck out there i am in love with but didn't consider getting as it was majors only. now i might just consider it....though, at USD 55, maybe not yet ;-) anyone who wants to take a peek can here http://www.themysticeye.com/pics/meditation.htm

cuddles: I have often looked at this deck on-line and sighed with delight. Maybe one day...........
