I've been hearing prople say that they have been using only the
Major Arcana to do readings.
I'm quite sure I understand why. In what situations would it be
best to use only the Mjor Arcana ?

I sometimes use only the majors when I need a very general look at things, to just see the greater influences. The so called significater of the situation or of the periods in my life.

All Majors when it is a reading of few cards and a question of Major proportions that does not need a lot of subtle explanations or minute details. The Minors deal with everyday annoyances on the mundane level and should be used in large spreads such as the Celtic Cross or larger - where you may not want to read 10 Majors in a Celtic Cross spread.

Some people do all their readings just with the Majors. The Majors have all the answers. The Minors are little helpers, but one can do without if one wants to.
For any really important issue, I will never use the Minors.
(And I use the Tarot mostly for important issues. :) ).
Of course, I also love studying the Minors - they're great and useful and they are there for a purpose. I love to use them as clarifiers, or for day-to-day more mundane stuff.
Why don't you just experiment and see what difference it makes?

I am glad I found this thread on majors only, since, just now, I ordered my first Majors only deck: The Portal. It is my Christmas present to myself. I hesitated and debated between it and the Fractal Firebird. The only thing that held me back was the Majors only aspect of it (that and the Major price, though I have heard it is well worth it. An xmas special was enough to break me down)
I am very much a completist and am annoyed by anything which is not whole. I couldn't see the point of getting a Majors Only deck. Perhaps I might make a majors only reading, but I know that I have the rest of the deck somewhere.
Anyway, I realized that my purpose for having these cards would be mainly for meditation and focus. I bought large cards that would be difficult to shuffle anyway, but which I could use for meditative comtemplation.

Hmmm...In my 20+ years with the Tarot, I have only focused on the Majors. There is quite a bit in those 22 cards. Some say the Secret Doctrine itself. Though I don't read cards, I have seen somewhere or other layouts that only use the 22.

There is much to be learned and to meditate on just those 22 cards. I guess that is what learning is partially: understanding the depth in many things. I am but new relatively to this and am glad to be learning from the experience of others such as you. Thank you.

Hi all,
I will use the Majors only when I am in a situation where I "can't see the forest for the tree". This is when I don't need a lot of detail, I just need to get on the right road again.

So the Major Arcana cards are the "just the facts" cards.
They give you the central core of the situation ?

Of course, this concept of using only the Majors supports the argument that the two halves of the Tarot deck were originally separate entities and joined somewhere in the recesses of history.
