card from top or fan out deck??

Just curious as to what different people do, to pick their cards for a reading.. and if there is any "right" or "wrong" way, or if it even matters. Do you shuffle and pick your cards off the top of the deck.. or do you fan the deck out and choose your cards intuitively? And what if a book says to shuffle and deal your cards a certain way? Like for example, I am going to use the Quest Tarot.. and the author (Joseph Martin) has a way to shuffle the cards and deal them out that seems foreign to me and I dont really like it. So, my question is.. does it matter how you pick your cards or do you just do what feels natural? Thanks for any input. :)

The last time there was a similar discussion, I remember that there appeared to be some differences seemingly geographically based: people in the USA tended to (on the whole but not solely) use the fanning selection less so than European based ones.

It isn't that there is a 'right' or not method, rather, that there are certain factors which play into each option. For some person, you may sense that fanning will be more appropriate, for others not so. Also, it is probably easier for beginners to develop a consistent approach, which can be modified later: choose which you feel more comfortable with.

Personally, I tend to take the cards of the top of a shuffled deck with some spreads, and fan with others - but even there I am not consistent.

Hi Sunflowr,

I think the important thing is to do what works best for you.
I pull cards from the top of the deck but, I have a friend who
pulls cards from inside the deck, and we both get valid & accurate
readings. As for special instructions (like with the Quest Tarot),
I say give it a try, but if it's not comfortable for you, just shuffle
& deal as you usually do.

I use a shuffle & lay, the fanning doesn't feel right to me.

I have always been a top-picker, but I had that earlier thread in mind when I decided to change my method of choosing cards for a recent spread. I felt confused as I tried to choose the cards from the fanned deck. I moved my hand slowly over the cards and tried to sense the ones that needed to be picked. It didn't work well at all, as I ended up with a very muddy reading that didn't seem to reflect the situation at all, no matter what angle I took. So I did the spread over, shuffling well and drawing from the top. The new draw came out much clearer.

For me, it generally depends on the deck, I am using, the spread I am using or even my mood. With my faeries oracle, I have "leapers" -cards that seem to leap right out of the deck (as distinct from merely falling). These are by far the most accurate readings that I do. My first reading for my mother in law- she was so nervous she dropped them on the floor, scrambled them into a pile and I read them off the top.
Maybe I'm a fatalist, but I trust the right cards will come out no matter how I shuffle or deal

I feel that as long as you're comfy wit hwhat you're doing, then it's right. There are no irght or wrong answres with the Tarot, and therein lies one of it's many beuaties.

As for fanning and/or dealing, it depends what spread I'm using. There is one spread which I call the 'Spheres of Life spread' which involves the querent choosing two cards for each area of life, from a fan of cards.

Otherwise I deal them.

thanks for the feedback so far! :) I usually have been fanning the deck out. I hate shuffling SO many times and then wondering if I shuffled "enough". ;) I just find it easier to let my hand do the picking of the cards. I havent done readings for others yet but I think it will be easier to do it that way too.. to let them pick their cards.

Sunflowr,
I think i have to agree with everyone that you do what feels right for you. There is no right way, only your way for you that feels best.
I shuffle until my cards won't go together anymore, cut the deck, then draw from the top. It works for me, i rarely get jumpers.
My fiance does what i laughingly call the "flying card method" when he shuffles, whatever leaps out (he's not rough when he shuffles but for some reason his cards do jump for him), he lays them in position. He has gotten accurate readings that way.
First time i saw him throw a spread for himself, i laughed, cards were flying everywhere, an interesting way to get a cc spread.
Doesn't matter whether he uses his deck or mine, the effect is still the same.
So i guess the point is, whatever feels settled with you will work best for you, don't worry about the book. I have found that blanket statements, like you need to do it this or that way generally tend to not work for me.

The Faerie's Oracle has "leapers" for me, too! When I read with them, I start shuffling, receive and corral the leapers, and choose any additional by the cauldron method (put all cards randomly on the table or floor and stir the pile with your hands, then pick from the pile).

Hi Sunflower

I asked this same question some time ago. And the advice you have been given is good. I use both methods. Like others, it depends on the spread, the deck, my mood. Recently, I found this very in depth version of the 3 card daily spread from The Tarot Handbook, which is a Thoth book. It describes fanning the deck, determining which end is the head and which the foot, then instructs you to ask three questions: where between my head and foot do I get the best sense of who I am (soul), where our my best decisions being made (mind), where do I feel the healthiest or clearest (body). I find it fun so that's what I've been doing for my daily spread. Also, I like to fan when the querent is in the room with me so that they are participating and most clairvoyants I know use the fanning technique. On the other hand, when I do readings for myself, I'll sometimes fan, esp. if doing the Celtic Cross, but a lot of times with other spreads I'll flip. But I always let the Oracle know. I announce out loud what my intention is. And that is the most important piece of advice that I'll give you. Like others have said, do what feels right. Said another way, be clear of what your intention is before you start. Then the right cards have no choice but to appear in your spread, imho!

all of the feedback is very much appreciated. :)

I shuffle until the deck "divides" itself by itīs own, sometimes that happens fast, then deal from the top.If I have leapers I notice them too of course.

I do it both ways.. i generally only read for myself... but i play around with picking from the top & fanning out.. also when i wrap my cards back up their shere scarf i always check out the card showing at the bottom ...

I fan out, scan my left hand over the fan and pick when my finger feels tingly.

Very occasionally I have used my pendulum to pick for a change. Takes a while though.

I never feel right dealing off the top, and I think it is important for whatever you do to feel right to you. Never mind what anyone else says.

I shuffle after each card I pull while thinking about the card spread meaning. May seem wierd but that way I know that the deck is suffeciently shuffled for the reading.
