my tarot confessions.

HOLMES  31 Mar 2003
after some thinking going on my mind about tarot standards, many of which we discussed, and the personal ritual we follow i must confess some things i dont' do when i follow the tarot and why, and what do you see.

1. i dont' spread the tarot, i keep them in a pile according to the order of the positions of the spreads but i don't lay them out in the cross , or any other spreads when i read, havne't done that in a year and a half , (this may be due to the fact that i dont' do live readings around here rarely as i live in a isolate area)

2. i look at the cards to get their positions down and then i rarely if ever look at the cards for inuitive readings.
what i do is i sit there and let it flow with the aspects of the chariot in the position, and the other cards that i associate with the chariot.
even when i read for other people i look off into space (this weekend when a friend who i didn't see for six months came for a reading ) and started talking about what the card means to me and what i got from impressions that were revealed by cards in that position, we got really deep.

3. sometimes as a clutch i resort to old school (puts head down) example the lovers cards poped up once and i was sharing about fear and choices.
then the lovers card popped up again (in a differnt reading postion ) and i said well what do we have here and i said you got feelings for someone , confess, (it was a friend we talk to each other like that) and she said i got feelings for someone but he is married. so while i was going with the higher ideals that i am learning of the tarot, i resorted to actual love of the lovers after it popped up again.

4. for drama affect i use the major arcana to point out fears and hopes an example of this is the devil card pops up and i asked a person who i read for in december what are you scared off and she said nothing,, and i said you have fears about the question asked, about your surroundings . please share.

5. this thread was about how i broke away from the traditional methods learned in the books, but still in number 3 i resorted to old schools things i learned and in number four i resorted to not a charltan, but the drama of a storyteller. after i said in a previous post in a differnt thread about no storyteller can reveal what a tarot reader knows. i think it is differnt for the card was a psychological cue of what needed to be discussed.

so i just felt i had to share .

Your post eloquently describes not only the way your tarot reading has evolved, but how important it is to have the structure of traditional symbolism -- our "tarot scaffolding" -- beneath you, combined with the individual approach that takes wing from there. Thank you for sharing this! :)

then I write them down in my journal and draw little rectangles around each symbol (I have symbols for the suits and acronyms for the majors) as if they were little cards. Thend I shuffle my deck again and leave it alone, refering only to the journal.

I do not like to look at the cards too much. Decks matter very little to me, unless the figure jumps at me when I open the card, I rarely refer to it. But then sometimes I only refer to it.

Who knows, we develop all these maneirisms with the cards.

Alex.
