What are your thoughts on 6 of wands (R)? In 78DW it talks about a false sense of optimism, but what else can it mean?

For me - it's about negative attitudes...... from the extremes of over-inflated ego to a complete loss of confidence. It's about the need to keep a sound perspective in troubled times and not become overwhelmed or defensive.... and to realise that one's attitude can become a self-fulfilling prophesy

I definitely agree with what Aoife has said, but would like to add a couple of thoughts.
This the 6 of Wands also brings to mind, for me, over-confidence. The kind of over-confidence that makes people feel they're indestructable and almost invariably leads to a serious downfall. This is the person who reads a book or two about rock climbing, makes a couple of easy climbs, then decides to climb El Capitan in Yosemite - if he's lucky he'll get stuck and have to be rescued - if he's not... well... it's a long way to the bottom. This is the person who's done dozens of hikes along the coast, then goes to Colorado to hike up the side of a mountain and gets altitude sickness. Another side, is the person who overextends themselves in business and ends up with a failed business.
Along these same lines is the person who is full of false optimism. The person who looks at everything through rose colored glasses. I think of a person who is more-or-less like a sheep in a pen... everything is great... they have everything they think they want... they're fat, dumb and happy... but eventually they're going to end up on the dinner table. This can relate to a person who won't face reality.
To me this card is a wake-up call. It's time to think about realizing that there are limits to what you can do. It's time to wake up and smell the coffee... to use an old colloquialism.
On the more positive side... if the card is in a position where it should be interpreted so, it may be pointing out that the person is full of self confidence and/or optimism. Obviously these can be very positive traits as long as they're tempered by reality.
Hope this helps.
