Four of Cups and Job Interviews

I have often done spreads regarding the outcome of a job interview, both for myself and for others, and the four of cups often comes up. When it is upright, it usually indicates a job offer or success. So when I saw it reversed, in one case, I interpreted it as a rejection. However, I was wrong, and my friend actually got the job.

What are your thoughts about the Four of Cups (upright and reversed) coming up in job interview readings?

I presume you are using Rider/Waite/Colman-Smith [rwcs] imagery, biddy9, for upon those decks, the offer, seamingly from thin air, of a cup to the one contemplation three upon the ground is certainly wonderful imagery for a job being offered in a reading related to interview situations.

With the reversal of the card, given that the hand of offer is still there, I can see how the position is still offered - a question I may still have is whether it is the position the person may genuinely seek or would be satisfied with.

Using non-RWCS cards, such as the Marseille, I may very well interpret the card quite differently. The 'key-words' which come to mind are more along the lines of stability of feeling/emotions. Upright I may therefore very well see this card as indicating a successful outcome in the interviewing process (but not necessarily accompanied by a job offer - I would need to have other cards to confirm this), and reversed as feeling as though one had more-or-less blown the interview (but again not necessarily the actual possible offer of a position).

Having said this, I would, of course, take the reading at hand in the moment - and thus each of what may be written about any card may suddenly become irrelevent to the unfurling of a particular design imaginatively transforming into the specific needs of the reading at hand...

Looking forward to other comments!

As for the upright interpretation, I think jmd hit it on the head. You're contemplating the other 3 cups - looking at your options, looking for the new job - and you have this 4th cup (the new job) offered to you.

Reversed... My first thought was the job offer comes through but something else gets in the way? Something may prevent the person from taking the offered job. Or, there is perhaps some reason that it may be a job offer one should take a second, closer look at before accepting. If it were in a reading for myself, I might even think to myself that there is a better offer coming along, or this one will not work out for some reason.

Just my personal opinion of course... actual mileage may differ...

Well, the interesting thing is that when I got the Four of Cups reversed (RW deck), the following two cards in relation to what the job will be like were also reversed. I interpreted this as indicating that the job wouldn't go ahead and that she'd miss out. However, my friend saw this job as a perfect opportunity and was really excited about it. So when she got the job, she was ecstatic. It's all quite confusing really!

'Take some more tea,' the March Hare said to Alice, very earnestly.

`I've had nothing yet,' Alice replied in an offended tone, `so I can't take more.'

`You mean you can't take less,' said the Hatter: `it's very easy to take more than nothing.'

Get it now?

Alex.

At the risk of sounding absolutely clueless, I think I only partially get the Alice in Wonderland thing. Is it that the Four of Cups suggests that sometimes you are not aware of something until you have it? Oh boy, sounding totally clueless now! Please explain!
