I have had to compact some of the more spread out layouts (Celtic Cross for example although not as much)for my cards due to both teh counter space i have and the fact that not all tarot cards are the same size.
Thsi had lead to some innovative spreads and the method of overlapping cards creating piles. Not that i haven't used this method before, i just have been using it more frequently than ever before.
But like the surface i am working with, the readings are more compacted in general interpretations. Smaller spreads work easily in this environment and i can create 6 piles of 13 cards with great readings.
Also, i have utilized another way to read the tarot. Take the entire or partial deck of cards, flip over the top card, interpret, keep that card in your hand and pick the next card in the pile but keep it face down in relation to teh first card, flip over both cards so that the front of each card is facing outward, repeat so that at the end the cards are equally divided by direction they are facing. Repeat until deisred or hand cramps.
There really aren't any defined positions for this spread so intuition should be enough.
