hi everyone,
i have a problem and I'm hoping someone can help me:
i can't really see a difference between the Magician and the Chariot - I see them both as willpower, confidence, a position of strength, and so on
could someone please point out the difference(s) between the two? I'd be very grateful !
thanks,
Spoonbender
(sorry if there are spelling mistakes, i'm really tired)

The short version...
The magician's will is focused on manifesting his desires, primarily through the way he presents himself and his skill with communication and art at relating. Both illusion and networking going on here. Many people associate some degree of trickery with him as well.
The chariot's will is fueled by the decision to take control and move with passion in a new direction in life. His strength is in his awareness of his environment and connections with others, and beyond, and his ability to remain balanced as opposed to extreme. He is associated with changes in the home and familial relationships.

If we look at the numbers of the cards, we see that the Chariot is a more fully developed manifestation of the Magus; the Potential of the Magician card has become dynamically Active.....

Yes, there is willpower and confidence in both--but then, there's willpower and confidence in a lot of Major cards. The Emperor and Strength, for example. To see the difference between these two, look at where they are, and what they're doing (we'll use the RW images for this).
Magician: Standing out in the open, performing a "magic trick" with the tools of creation on display before him.
So he's extroverted, a showman, a talker (communicating with his audience). He likes being seen (unprotected, out in the sun), he is active, inventive, but not going anywhere. He's on his stage and he's staying right there till he's done; his only aim is to entertain. Suceeding is a matter of personal pride.
Chariot: The man is still, standing in a chariot with black-and-white steeds. He's armored.
Okay, you can see the difference right away--this person isn't waving his hands, isn't talking, isn't showing off. His willpower and focus is utterly and entirely on those steeds--his hands are given to the reigns. And far from being completely confident, he's protected by both armor and chariot. Chariots are for races and battle--success isn't just a matter of pride, but of grave importance. Failure could leave him hurt, damaged. Also the purpose of a chariot is to get the driver from one place to another--to travel!
Thus:
Magician: The will and confidence to create new ideas--to put in people's heads images of what might be. To inspire.
Chariot: The will and confidence to master chaotic forces, to be in control--to GO from here to there, to reach a goal and be victorious.
