3 of Cups / 3 of Swords

I am not sure if this is posted anywhere.. but this is something that has always confused me.
The cups are associated with emotion and the swords with thoughts (to be simplistic). Yet, the 3 of Swords usually represents a loss in love.... I always felt this would be the 3 of Cups...
maybe i'm being brain dead here... but can anyone explain why this is a swords card? Thanks!
