Do the cards of the minor arcana parallel the 22 majors?

Hopefully I can make this question clear...
I think I read somewhere that each card of the minor arcana "matches" a card in the major arcana. The concept seemed to be that each of the minors is a smaller element of a conceptually identical greater trump. An example would be, say, the Ace of Wands paralleling the Empress, for instance (I am just guessing for the sake of an example).
Anyway, I read this in a book on basic card meanings, but I guess I don't have that resource anymore. Has anybody else heard of this before?

I don't remember where either but I also remember it from somewhere. I want to say it was from an online source. Aha... Joan Bunnings online course the exercise for lesson 12 is one reference. I will try to find the other one I am thinking of and will edit to include it.

Tauni ... There is no one 'right' way of looking at it, but one possible approach is to match each pip card (Ace to Ten) with the corresponding numbered card of the first ten numbered major arcana cards, starting with I Magician. Thus, the Ace of each suit would go with I Magician; the Two of each suit would go with II Empress; and so on; with the Ten of each suit going with X Fortune. As for the eighth trump, even with the Rider-Waite based decks, you may wish to experiment with the Tarot de Marseille trump order, using VIII Justice rather than VIII Strength, to see which VIII works best for you.
In the case of court cards, you might try matching them with the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th ordered trumps.
If you use reversals, you can even be cute and match the 11th to 20th trumps to the reversed Ace to Ten, respectively.

You mean two's with the High Priestess, right?
Tauni, Rusty is absolutely right--this is the most common match up, the first ten majors (from Magician to Wheel of Fortune) matched up with the ten minors of each suit. There are problems with this method--and other ways of matching up, of course. But it works very well for familiarizing yourself with the cards. Every time you see an Ace, you think "Magician," and how he's full of energy and creativity and potential.
Or you look at the 2's and think of the High Priestess, sitting between her pillars, trying to balance things out, intuit the right answer, etc.
As for the court cards, Pages are usually matched up to the Fool, Knights are sometimes matched up to the Chariot (in one deck, the "Princes"--equilivant to Knights--are all driving chariots)--the Queens are matched to the Empress and the Kings to the Emperor.

Yes, II Priestess, of course. Proofreading is not my strong suit, pardon the pun. That'll be my new year's resolution.

also you can use 11-18 like this 1+1=2
therefore:
11 Justice is related to High Priestess or
1+5 =6 The Devil / The Lovers
1+7 = 8 the Star / Strength, you get the idea
i dont think one should get really hung up on itbeing THE way to read cards; but it does make for interesting study between cards and how they support each other, influences they share, and iconography

Greetings,
i went to the thread "my major Tarot realization" refered by diana and i would like to say that Being a member of this forum has brought me much insight to the art of tarot. Reading as many posts as time will permit has brought me such joy and reassurance. Reading about everyones experiences has helped me to realize all the different types of methods for reading tarot cards, this excites me a great deal and influences me to find and develop the methods that suit me best
In reading I have found that there is no universal method of reading and using tarot cards, but only individuality of the Tarot cards themselves, and individuality of the reader, in this I find beauty and freedom. I find that there are several different levels of reading and understanding , to cater to every ones needs and understandings. I have enjoyed both particular threads a great deal and appreciate all those that put the time and thought into responding. Thank you :)
Humbly yours,
robyn.

Diana, Lady M., Thirteen, robyn, rusty, catti, and Lee...
Thank you all for troubleshooting this with me...
I have checked out Holmes' thread as suggested (numereous times now), and indeed it is very informative. Ditto on Diana's suggestion, if you are looking to clarify the Majors/Minors connection.
Thanks again,
T. :)

Yes, I once took a tarot class that matched up the first ten minor arcana with the marjor arcana, and then each major aracana had a key phrase to help with memorizing. It went something like this:
I Magician (aces) = "new beginnings"
II High priestess (twos) = "I know"
III Empress (threes) = "I create"
IV Emporer (fours) = "I realize"
V Hierophant (fives) = "I believe"
IV Lovers (sixes) = "I choose"
VII The Chariot (sevens) = "The path"
VIII Strenth (eights) = "Strength"
IX Hermit = (nines) "wisdom through experience"
X Wheel (tens) = "major changes"
It was an interesting way to help with memorizing the cards.
