Can we talk about the Moon? I was looking intently at the Victoria Regina deck Moon card, while thinking about my soulmate out there somewhere. In this respect, the search for a soulmate would be misdirected (Out There), and should occur "in here"; within myself.
The Moon, by the way does not scare me at all; I am fluid and open to intuition and "synchronicity". I suppose in readings, some people are frightened by the unknown, by symbolsim, by things that are hidden from their awareness.
Any thoughts?
Warmest,
Elle

In regards to your soulmate, if you're looking to the Moon, then you're likely seeking someone very creative, implusive, sexual, wild, and, of course, romantic. But beware, you're going to have to accept that he will also be unreliable, unpredictable. I'm talking guy who may not show up if you have dinner reservations, who might leave to be with friends one night and three nights later, after worrying you sick, calls you from another city; his only excuse: he had to follow his muse, had to go where the moon directed him. And that's just the tip of the iceberg....

What's scary about the Moon isn't the intuition aspect of it, but the lack of control. Remember that the Moon, at it's worse extreme, is madness--and anyone whose ever known mental illness will tell you, the scariest thing is lacking control. This can include hormonal impluses which is why women are so connected to the Moon, because they're subject to monthly ups and downs in hormones. I remember one woman who seriously needed to be on hormone therapy--without it, she flew into uncontrollable rages for seemingly no reason at all. One wrong word, however quietly uttered, had her screeching and throwing things!
It must have been pretty scary for her, knowing, in her head, that she was being completely unreasonable, yet unable to help herself. Another friend of mine who was taking birth control pills, would sob uncontrollably for no apparent reason. Once, her boyfriend kissed her hello and she brust into tears. And, again, she knew, in her head, there was no reason to cry, but she couldn't help it. Once off the pills, she was fine.
Depression, mania, hallucinations, rage, jealously, inability to concentrate or focus, severe mood swings, being dreamy and in your head--and let's include that artistic friend of yours (whoever he/she might be), brilliant, imaginative, intuitive...but also unreliable, inconsistent, tempermental, and usually in rehab for drug/alchohol abuse. These are all under the Moon. Darn right it's a scary card. Consider a little kid with a parent who's ruled by the Moon. The dad/mom might be imaginative and fun, even loving, but there's no trusting them to feed or change the baby or to pick up their older kid from school because they daydream, lose track of time, or just fall into depressions. Nor can they be trusted to be consistent in mood. One day it's all right for the child to leave his clothes on the floor, another day they're shrieking and throwing a tantrum because the child left a sock in the living room. Would you want this person to raise a child?
The Moon, at it's best, can make you creative, psychic, intuitive, empathetic, open-minded. But you don't want it running your life--or anyone elses. It's too unpredictable. Too scary.

So if not for soulmates (but lovely tarot illustrations), when does the Moon signify artistic dreams and creativity? Does it always denote illusion and poor mental health? Things that are in shadow and murky situations?
Pondering,

No, it doesn't always denote the negative, of course not. In most cases, also, we can presume that the Moon isn't going to extremes. You're not going to pull it and say, "Darn, I'm going to go insane tonight...." ;) But if you're heading out to a bar I'd watch the drinking. If, on the other hand, you were planning on writing some music or painting some pictures, you can guess that it's going to be a creative evening.
The sticky part is if you pull the Moon for another person, a guy or a date or a weekend romp. That's when you don't know what you're going to get. The bright, liquid light of the full moon, reflecting the Sun as Diana pointed out--or the dark? All you know for sure is this--put yourself under the moon, and you surrender control. Like the tide, you go where it takes you.

On a slightly unrelated note...these lyrics always remind me of The Moon...it's from a song called The Clairvoyant by Iron Maiden.
Feel the sweat break on my brow
Is it me or is it the shadows that are dancing on the walls
Is this a dream or is it now
Is this a vision or normality I see before my eyes
I wonder why I wonder how
That it seems the power's getting stronger every day
I feel a strength an inner fire
But I'm scared I won't be able to control it anymore
There's a time to live and a time to die
When it's time to meet the maker
There's a time to live but isn't it strange
That as soon as you're born you're dying
Just by looking through your eyes
He could see the future penetrating
right in through your mind
See the truth and see your lies
But for all his power couldn't foresee his own demise
There's a time to live and a time to die
When it's time to meet the maker
There's a time to live but isn't it strange
That as soon as you're born you're dying...
... and reborn again??

Elle,
Yeah, Moon is very ambiguous. Sometimes the good things about Moon are exactly what makes it dangerous etc. Intuition, synchronicity etc, I associate more strongly w/the HP... Moon as soulmate, might indicate someone who is highly adaptable, but in this sense lacks stability or straightforwardness. Difficult to 'pin down'. But my perception is heavily influenced by Moon's association w/the sign of Pisces...

The Moon has always been one of my favorite cards in the Major Arcana. Perhaps it is because I suffer from bipolar disorder, so I can relate to the mood swings and unpredictability of the card. To add a little something to the moodswing interpretation, it doesn't always have to be negative. I also see The Moon card as a sort of balance; like, you cannot have light without dark. For me, personally, The Moon reminds me to get plenty of sleep, in order to be balanced and whole. It also tells me that there will always be something to pull at you, to try your patience, but that is the way of life. It is how we view these things and turn them into a lesson that will affect us in the long-run.
If we live totally for The Moon, we are letting the darker things in life tempt us and take hold of us, which can lead to unhappiness and bitterness. However, if we balance both light and dark, and exert control of ourselves, we can be more stable. I think acceptance of both sides also comes into play. It is sometimes difficult to say what I mean, however, I hope I've made my humble point.
Blessings, Michelle

It is 10:10 PM here in NY.

I just wanted to add that as someone with Manic-depression, I have experienced the 'dark side of the Moon' card.
I been to a very scary place, where chaos reigns, and even now am in a battle to keep in balance.
So, that 'Moon' card really scares me!, and reminds me of how I sometimes view things around me when I'm low - reality is not what it appears to be, there is distortion, paranoia and the desire to 'hide' inside.
Those dogs howling at the moon on the cards' picture, speak of 'luna-cy', and indeed 'lunacy' comes from the 'luna' connection.
I'm also a Piscean moon, with Virgo Sun - two complete opposites at work within me, and that moon sign I believe has a big part to play in my emotional upheaveals, just as it does with the positive aspects, of creativity and psychism.
So, that's my two cents!!.
MMuttley.
