I was wondering when you are doing a reading and a card comes up that can represent something hidden , how can you tell what that particular thing is or is about? I am new to reading the tarot so I can't remember the card off hand right now what stands for it.

One thing you can do is see what the cards around the card mean. That could give some hints.
Another is to put down a couple of cards for clarification.
Or go with "gut" feelings. This is often much better than you think it would be.
Often the person you are doing the reading for will know what it means even if you don't.
Hope this helps...

Cindy,
All the 78 cards carry a large spectrum of meanings.
In order for you to figure which of these meanings better fits a given situation, there are several approaches you may use:
- The use of reversals or elemental dignities helps a lot to see if the card should be read in a more positive or negative way.
- The actual position of the card. If you use a spread like the Celtic cross for example, you have cards that stand for the querent, for the past, the future, the unconcious, and so on.
- The actual question should give you a direction as well.
- And like Deserthowler said, The surrounding cards also help a lot.
- The last and most important thing: trust your intuition! But this is something you'll develop slowly, and only through practice :-)
Peace,
Aun.
