Hello Maya, and welcome to the forum!
Well, you have asked many wonderful questions, which will take volumes to answer. Each question deserves its own thread!

who only applies the 22 major arcana in readings.
There are people who divine with the Major Arcana only. There are a few threads about this in Using Tarot Cards. I'd like to invite you to have a look through my table of contents at the top of this forum.
What do you think about their origin?
As far as your question as to origins, this is such a wonderful and intriguing question that we we have an entire forum dedicated to answering this question, LOL. So please enjoy browsing through the history section.

Your final question: Do you use readings more for divination or for a guidebook, is one that I have often wondered too. (It should be it's own thread too). There are certainly many people on this forum who use the cards for divination, and who are very expert at it.
As for myself, I do not yet consider myself able to divine the future from the cards, but use them, as you say, as a guidebook, or a mirror for reflections. They help me think through problems.
Sometimes they give me clues to things I don't understand, and it is almost like divination. For me, divination is really the goal, not just "fortune telling" divination... but "touching the divine" divination... its the goal, its what keeps me interested. One day...

 Dear firemaiden,
here comes in a very stunning thing:
human language.
To me divination and fortune-telling are equal.
Maybe one can say fortune-telling is a perverted art, while,
divination is an art.
But reading as a guidebook for me is including
precognition on the highest level, too.
The difference between divinatory readings and guidebook readings to me is:
A guidebook will not tell anybody what to do, how to do it and what will happen but will give schemes and maps the time seems right to explore and the reader will attempt to clarify the best possible demeanour with the greatest outcome of efficiency for all concerned. So a guidebook is a source of conduct and wisdom getting you to be a better person, a happier wordly resident.
That is my understanding of those terms, whatsoever.

Very interesting Maya. I will ponder your words. Would you be willing to discuss a bit further what you mean by "pre-cognition on the highest level?"
