3 Rods?

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 25 Jan 2004, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Red Emma  25 Jan 2004
This morning my "outcome" card was the three of Rods, Moon Garden Deck. I generally think of it as good news -- kind of like a solid start to a new project, self confidence, all that good stuff.

But, the Moon Garden 3 R shows a sail boat setting out on a journey....into a solitary sea. In the foreground are some trees kind of framing the picture. On one of the trees some shelf mushrooms are sucking the tree's inner resources. I never really noticed those elements before.

And it's been that kind of a day. A Pacific Northwest Bleak January day. An organization on whose board my husband serves turned out badly because of an unfortunate CEO. And upset people have been calling.

Lordy, those shelf mushrooms really took a toll on him, and of course Miss Empathy herself, Red Emma.

Do the dumb cards change from day to day?

I like your last question, Red Emma, even though I do not quite know what to say regarding the overall situation or the card in that context... and as I do not have the deck, I only have but a misrepresentation of its depiction in my mind's eye...

The changeability of cards, from day to day, is quite astounding - yet key features remain.

On the changeability of the card, they do seem to really present details which we but observe on the moment - as you so beautifully express. I also remember you posting about the situation (with regards the CEO of some organisation) some time back.

But this card is not so much for the organisation, but yourself in the context of the day... I presume...

So some quick comments on the three Rods/Bastons/Wands/Staff card... including some of your own detailed observations:

You mention that the mushrooms you observe on the card are 'sucking the tree's inner resources', and also that the card 'shows a sail boat setting out on a journey....into a solitary sea'.

These are, of course, details already interpreted in a particular way, which I can only but honour... still, a powerfully perceived detail.

With regards to the 3 Staffs/Bastons/Rods, as this thread is in Using Tarot Cards, what comes to mind is also the need to communicate thoughts and ideas in a congenial or light hearted manner (I refer, here, of the suit as an Air suit - many of course link the suit to Fire).

Interpreted in this way, the tendency may be to take any communicated idea too seriously (even the serious ones), rather than see them in the lightest and most helpful way.

I would even suggest that if the card came out in the sense described, I would be tempted to encourage taking the serious as not in the least serious!

But, as usual, I look forward to your consequent reply... as well as the posts of others :)

Hi Red Emma
I sometimes see the 3 of wands as the partner card.
Since it was in your daily spread I think it very accurately told you that you would have to be a sympathetic, active, partner to your husband today.
Listening to and sharing his burden.

We become so close to our spouses that we take on their pain and disappointment sometimes as our own.
And sometimes it (sucks up our inner resources)
But just by being there and being sympathetic we can somehow lighten the load for them.
Listening to and sharing their burdens if thay have a bad day...
I think that is what the partnership aspect of the 3 of wands has taught me.

Been a long time since I studied biology, but being from the Northwest myself, just a bit further nort than yourself, I had a thought about those mushrooms. I thought that they were sort of symbiotic with trees, that the tree and mushroom both give and take with each other. I thought the mushroom is sort of a protective, healing part of where the tree may have been injured from something. I know it works that way with that white fungus stuff below all the fresh needles and duff on the forest floor, the trees and fungus are benificial for each others existance. The primary thing is that the mushroom isn't harming the tree.

I have told people that this card shows there is a waiting involved & someone is going to show their "true colors."

The true colors has worked. People you thought you knew untill something happens & then you see them in their true light. Sometimes good sometimes bad. It's always waiting to see what will be the rewards of the ship you sent away.

Just some ideas.

I love this card.
In a reading I did last night, I asked about what I could do to secure a home for my family when our lease expires next month. I got the 3 of Wands and the 6 of Swords. I guess I need to move away! :)
I always see it as striking off on your own, literally or metaphorically, and it to me heralds the start of a fortunate new project or cycle. But, sometimes leaving hurts, so there may be some disappointment or sorrow associated with the leaving.
