A question arose earlier on in the thread for this card in the 78 weeks journey series, regarding the glove or gloves worm by the pope in many versions of the card, and of its depicted cross. I thought I would wait till the week was over before posting some rather brief notes and reflections.
I also thought that the Pope thread in the History and Iconography section mentioned the gloves, but could not see it as I rather quickly scanned through its posts.
There is a tradition which mentions that these crosses are emblemetical of Christ's wounds, and, as God/Christ's representative on Earth, the see of the Church would have its presiding officer depict such symbolic stigmata on its person.
Here, for the faithful, is therefore an 'obvious' allusion that the representative of Christ on Earth also bears His burden and pain...

jmd, thankyou for this thread.
I too, looked at the Pope thread in History and Icon before posting my question about the gloves and Maltese Cross but couldn't find anything. I have tried searching on the net but haven't found anything there either. I look forward to reading your reflections later. thanks

Mabee it contains to when everyone wore gloves & everything was kept hidden.(hidden life) Remember when all the ladies wore gloves? Mabee way back a Priest was the keeper of hidden spiritual knowledge.Pope even more so. White being the colour to show his spiritual knowledge & cleanness. Also who's the men wearing black gloves?
White pertaining to the "light" (as he moves his hands)
Just ideas.

Thanks jmd, moonbow and allibee for this research information on the gloves question - good to know why and when they wore them to understand that in the Hierophant cards that it must then depict that it is a special mass or ceremony that is being depicted.

Gloves became important in all liturgical ceremonies, from about the year 500 AD onwards. The priests wore gloves made of leather or cotton kind of material. The higher clerics wore woolen or silk gloves. A pontifical Bull dating back to the twelfth century, mentions that gloves needed to cover the hands tightly, that they must have five fingers, a longish cuff and must have a sacred symbol embroidered on them.
In the Middle Ages, gloves were a symbol of power. Only the nobility were allowed to wear gloves. Simple peasants and artisans and such-like had to wear mittens.
Now, on to another subject.
On May the 2nd 1312, the Knights of Malta inherited what remained of the Knights Templars riches (all those that the cursed King, Philip the Bel, didn’t get his hands on).
Pope Clement V (may his soul not rest in peace) was the lackey of Philip the Bel.
Attached is a picture of Philip le Bel, holding his gloves – the symbol of power.

Wasn't this more a function of cost? Gloves were more difficult to make and therefore much more expensive than mittens. Maybe we could call it conspicuous consumption as a symbol of power. :)
Whilst I was examining The Pope from several different Marseilles tarots I noticed a large number of discrepancies between the different versions. One of these were the gloves. In some versions The Pope wore gloves, in others he worn one glove and in yet other versions he wore no gloves at all. In some the gloves were white in others the gloves were blue. Some gloves carried the Maltese Cross, others did not.
I gave it up for a bad job so my Pope doesn't wear gloves. I may have to rethink the Maltese cross in view of Jmd's information.
