This thread is intended to initiate a discussion on the number nine. First, some properties of the number in and on itself, and second, the number nine as it relates to the Tarot.

I know very little about numerology and most of what I’m writing here are ideas I got from Richard Roberts book “Tarot revelations”.

The number nine is peculiar in that all of its multiples can be reduced to nine.

Demonstrating:
18: 8+ 1= 9
27: 2+ 7= 9
36: 3+ 6= 9
45: 4+ 5= 9
54: 5 + 4=9
etc

Also, when the number nine is added to any of the nine primary digits, reduction restores that number once again.

Demonstration:
1 + 9 = 10 reducing: 1 + 0 = 1
8 + 9 = 17 reducing: 1 + 7 = 8
2 + 9= 11 reducing: 1 + 1 = 2

Numerologically, it is often associated with the ideas of completion, attainment, fulfillment, goal of endeavor, end of a cycle of activity. Most of these associations root to the two properties mentioned above.

In the Tarot, the number 9 is the key to the relationship between the Major Arcanum keys 1-22.
For example,
15-The Devil reduces to 1 + 5 = 6-The lovers. Between the two there is a difference of 9.
16-The Tower reduces to 1 + 6 = 7-The Chariot and between the two there is a difference of nine.
And so on.

I’ll stop here. Please add your comments to the number nine, and let’s see what we can learn together.

Nine is the triplication of the triple........ three triangles each made up of three points. It is therefore said to represent a complete image of the three worlds - corporeal, intellectual and spiritual.

A triple synthesis.
Since three is the number of innovation, its square is said to represent universality.
The three times threefold repetition is said to be significant in ritual magic.
The nine choirs of angels - the three triads..... perfection of perfection, order in order and unity in unity.

The nine celestial spheres; the nine circles of hell.
Dante’s number of heaven
Demeter wandered the world for nine days in search of her daughter Persephone.
Leto laboured for nine days to give birth to the nine Muses.

Nine as a number of fulfilment appears in many cultures.
Nine is said to symbolise the successful outcome of gestation, exertion and the fulfilment of creation.
The nine months gestation of a foetus.
As the last of a series of single digits, it brings both closure and an awareness of a new start, on another level or plane.

9

-dissapears in other number giving back the" identity or life" to that number. e.g. 9+7=16 1+6=7 7 regains it's identity etc.

-1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8= 9 obtains all the other numbers being the last of the single digit numbers. (completion)9 understands because 9 has gone through all the other numbers as explained above.

-planet Mars rules #9
-planet Venus rules #6

9-conflict (mars)
6-love (venus) 9 is reverse of 6

9 balances struggles from all forces of knowledge.(as explained above)

9-card of Hermit-helps to transform issues from l level to another. 9 months of inner creative work, then birth. When we understand this, the Hermit makes sense "inner work" & helping people through his knowledge.9"s are the teachers & healers giving their knowledge birth as they help others.

9-gathers all the knowledge from above & brings it to the ground.

I quote the following from Jonathan Dee - Tarot An Illustrated Guide

'In Tarot, the number is seen as extremely complex and may be said to embody the perfected essence of each suit. The Nine of Rods is a steady flame, the Nine of Cups a gushing fountain, the Nine of Swords is one of the most troubled cards in a troubled suit, and the Nine of Pentacle is complete material comfort'
