The deck is shuffled the cut has been made & put back in to one & the client hands you the cards across the table.
Do you read the cards as they are handed to you or do you "TURN " the deck so their top of the card, is going to be your top of the card when you start to lay out the spread?
I use to lay the cards sideways & ask them what end did they want at the top of the card . Now I shuffle the cards, let them cut, etc. & after they pull the cards I read them as if they picked them from my side of the table. If the card turns during the picking I just leave it turned. I don't get hung up on this but if you do reversals it makes a difference, & I don't always, I just look at the overall reversed cards, but it still makes a difference.
Thanks for any replys.

I always turn them around. You must have a system and your cards will know. I had a system but I didn't follow it once. It was a reading for someone from my family. This person drew cards and I KNEW I was to turn them, but she said that the top was where her bottom was. Everything got mixed up and they didn't say what they were supposed to and I even had difficulties with interpreting them :(. I don't listen to people anymore and I do what I do :D.

To me, this is the key to all these questions about method. Once I chose a way of cutting, asking, and positioning cards, the tarot and I are able to communicate. If I unexpectedly do something different and don't say it ahead, the messages can't come through.
Whatever else Tarot is or does, it listens to us. We need to be consistent for it to be able to get through clearly.

Ive never really paid attention...which must mean that I read them the way that they are handed to me.

I don't think there is a set way each time you read, just do what feels comfortable :):):) XTAX

I guess I doubt myself.
I have my own way of reading AND THEN you starting thinking about the what if's.
Thanks

I decide before I start shuffling, and silently "tell" my cards what I am going to do... and they cooperate 99% of the time.

Jypsie,
That is how I do it as well and it has always worked for me, even when it means that I do things differently every time. So long as I "specify" to my cards, exactly what we will be doing and how we will be going it, for each reading as I shuffle or meditate over them, things work out just fine.
I will add though that I do try to be consistant with my routine, but sometimes the situation calls for something different, or maybe I just might feel like trying something new for a change :)
When it comes to turning or not turning the deck when it is handed to me, I always turn it.
