Hello! I am new with the tarot cards and want to start practicing on myself to get in sync with them. I was wondering if there is a simple way to start out, such as the celtic cross. that looks to be a little advanced for me since it's reading has to do with the surrounding cards. Is there a "begginer" spread that I should start doing to just get the hang of the cards. Also what about the reversed cards, I belive that I read somewhere that when you are a begginer you shouldn't really read those, am I understanding that correctly? thanks for helping, Melanie

You may want to use the search button on the top right corner of the forum concerning reversals. It's a controversial topic, to say the least, and you'll find more to read than you can ever imagine. :D
I personally favor using simple two, three, and at most, five card spreads in the beginning. Each card is affected by the other cards in a spread and it just seems to me that one should master doing it for a few cards before graduating to large numbers of cards. However, that is JMO. :)

I strongly recommend starting with a Three card spread.
Once you're comfortable with 3 cards you can start looking for something else. ;)

An idea would be to start out using a one-card daily draw. In this way, you could familiarise yourself with the cards on a one to one basis, before moving on to more complex spreads.

I love pulling just one card each morning and learning that one card through the day. Just to immerse yourself in it.
Also, I'm from NC also! Orange County specifically, near Chapel Hill. Hi neighbor!

Hi 13th!
I am in Wilmington and heading back to CO as soon as possible, NC not for me :)
Well that one card that you pull every morning and get to know. Do you also do small spreads on yourself, becuase I want to keep doing small spreads so I can learn to reconize things. Learn to read them together to get a general message. do you do the same thing? Melanie

Also how should I cut the cards? i read some posts about shuffling but haven't read any about cutting the cards. Also what about when do a read on myself at first and the cards are upside down. Those meanings are a little tough to read aren't they? How should I deal with those ? Melanie

Take me with you to CO!!!!
I wouldn't be here if it weren't for kids/grandparents....my best friend lives near Carbondale, CO and I try to go out there once a year to see her. Wilmington is pretty cool, it's one of our yearly trips to da beach.
As far as small readings, I do the 3 card spreads. They can be used for so many things....past present future; yes or no; etc.
Here's a site with spreads listed by number of cards:

I know CO is beautiful isn't it! Carbondale is nice. I lived in Grand Junction for 4 years so I was close by.
I checked out that website and that was very helpful I want to keep doing the small spreads so that I get a feel for it and learn to really understand the cards..together. Thanks for the info, Melanie

I love Grand Junction! She used to live there also....and we always go to the vapor caves spa there when I visit her.
She used to work for Inner Mountain beverage company....in case you might know her. Seems like everyone knows everyone around there!

The vapor cave spas are in Glenwood springs and it's very cool there I know I love it there too, stinky though :)
You are right about everyone knowing everyone out there. I am not familar with Inner mountain beverage though. So I may not know her unless she lived in Junction in the last 4 years and didn't work for inner mountain beverage, than maybe :) It's a small world as I get older that is diffently a true statement.
