Well, seeing as we have finally understood why the Pope has a telephone pole, I'd like to move on to a new question:
Why does the Magician have an ironing board?

Perhaps he is ironing the Fool's clothes in preparation for his journey? ;)

I think it is because his responsibility is to iron out all of lifes difficulties.

It's not an ironing board. It is a wallpaper table. It folds up and he can carry it with him. I see a lot of these tables at the market (swap meet for my American friends or car boot sale for my British friends).

It's actually a surfboard, and he's waxing it.

No no no.
It't quite obvious that it's one of those little folding picnic tables. This is a very domesticated Magician and he is laying out a bread board, a carving knife, a honey dipper and a cup. He and his friends are going to have a picnic of bread, butter and honey - all washed down with a nice cup of tea.
He's just thrown his hands into the air in horror - because he's realised he forgot the napkins.
(er, should this be in Using Tarot Cards? )

I agree with Baba Prague that he is preparing a picnic. But I don't know how good the picnic is going to be -- looking as he is over his shoulder to catch the ball game on TV.... But what perplexes me more, if he is watching the ball game on TV, why is he smoking his cigarette in a holder? Those two ideas don't go together -- watching sports on TV is so... well, plebian, and the cigarette holder is so... aristrocratic, if you know what I mean. And.... a further mystery, if he is an aristrocrat, as the cigarette holder suggests, why then (assuming the object in his right hand is a button), does he need to sew his own buttons on?

You know the Magician can be a little over dramatic at times...
It's all me, me, me, look at why I'm doing. If he just paid attention to what he is doing then he wouldn't need that table that can collapse and fold up quickly, so he can do a runner....

Edited to add: Major Tom in Australia we would say 'market' or 'flea market'....just in case you forget the Southern Hemisphere folk....

Ah Baba. I see you too noticed the honey dipper
You know what they say: You can catch more bees with honey than you can with vinegar ... and the magician is a very accomplished bee keeper, hence the big hat, just a shame the art doesn' t show the veil ;)
Or maybe its because the High Priestess needed it :)

firemaiden: That just goes to show what a great illusionist this guy can be. He actually got you to believe his Tabula is an ironing board. And you fell for it.

Oh Diana, that's just plain silly. Have you ever tried ironing on a tabula?

Or perhaps he's trying to trick himself into thinking he can iron on his Tabula. :D

Quoted from the online dictionary:
\Tab"u*la\, n.; pl. {Tabul[ae]}. [l.]
1. A table; a tablet.
2. (Zo["o]l.) One of the transverse plants found in the calicles of certain corals and hydroids.
---Hey, ironing on those plants leaves horrible wrinkles. And hydroids! Just the worst.
