You don't need an altar to read tarot, that's something used in pagan religions or where you're spiritually connecting to nature. It's basically a place to set your sacred things, candles, and other items of importance.
There's a lot of overlap with tarot and different spiritualities, so you'll see references to that more than once on the board, I'm sure.
All you need with tarot is a set of cards and some place to keep them. Anything else is extra.

If I had space I would have an altar, but its not at all related in any way to my Tarot. While it may seem to some people that Paganism and Tarot go hand in hand, they are very seperate entities.
You don't need an altar to read Tarot.

I have a few altars in my house...my main big one is in the living room atop my piano and corresponds to the Sabbats. Right now it is filled with daffodils, rabbits, eggs and sunshiney things to celebrate Ostara.
I have a bedside altar which has objects from around the world on it....twin praying Buddhist women, a box from Iraq (from a soldier I correspond with) a gorgeous Ganesh a friend from India brought me, rocks and crystals, little statuary from Thailand and Indonesia and my collection of tiny animals.
I hope to have two more set up by the end of the week. One will be a mermaid altar in my bathroom...just waiting on the mermaid doll that a friend made and some shells from Israel.
The other will be a tarot altar on the top shelf of my tarot bookcase. It will consist of a doll on a couch (she's gothic looking) with a table next to her and on top of the table is a set of tiny tarot cards!! I can't wait for that one :)
I also have an offering altar outside in my stone circle, for the faeries.
