Hi! I am totally new to all this. I am a skeptical pagan, but have been interested for a while in learning what the tarot cards are about. (I already use runes occasionally, as a way to understand what I really think about things, rather than a way of 'divining' the future)
I recently found a set of Marseilles cards at an op shop for 50c!! I wasnt too attracted initially, but I wont argue at that price and since learning the history and more about them they attract me greatly.
MY QUESTION: to learn any tool it is good to practice regularly. Thing is, I very rarely have pressing issues! I have had runes for the last five years and used them maybe twice, three times a year! I am unlikely to read for others.
How often do you have a question for the cards?
Do you think asking about every tiny little thing reduces the 'impact' or makes it less worthy? (think of a friend who asks for your guidance in EVERYTHING). I would like to be able to use them often to aid learning, but sometimes I feel it is disrespectful....
Thanks,
Stella

After reading Pollack's The Forest of Souls and because I like to explore different kinds of decks' "attitudes," I've started playing with odd philosophical questions and see what I can make of the spread I get.
Today I asked the Thoth, "What can you tell me about synchronicity?" (3 cards) I got the 10 of Cups, the Knight of Cups and the Princess of Cups. (And the deck was well shuffled.)
So I'm playing with interpretations of those to get an answer that makes sense to me. Something to write about in my tarot journal.
I also say, "tell me a story" and lay out 6 cards and make a narrative of it, with one card as the Hero. I tried this as a suggestion in the games thread, but that idea didn't spark any response. I had fun with it, though.
I liked the person's quote (somewhere on AT) who said "tarot is spiritual solitaire." It's a game that can take you anywhere in your imagination.

I do daily readings either for myself or my significant other...I usually do a one card reading and learn that card in depth...it's amazing how much detail and accuracy you can get from one card, and it allows me to learn each card individually and in detail so that one day I may actually graduate to larger spreads with confidence...

It depends on what you consider pressing issues.
I need to find a new physician among those available in my HMO. I was thinking of a certain person even though the one time I saw him he stereotyped me as a slightly bewildered old woman.
Part of that statement is true, at 77 I am an old woman. But I'm not bewildered at all. When M.D.'s stereotype patients, they don't listen, ignore your ideas and concerns. Actually they treat a person who doesn't exist.
My plan was to see him, talk to him, change his perception of me.
Then I decided to ask the tarot. It said he doesn't like to change his ideas and lacks vision.
Well, hell, I don't need a doctor like that!
I'm thinking of getting a list of doctors available at the HMO and running a tarot check on the lot of them.

I normally don't have a question for myself anymore. But whenever something is troubling you, it's good to do a reading. Likewise when something excites or intrigues you, etc. Some people do daily card draws, which is a good way to learn.
I thought it would be a long time before I read for others, but with a little support from the community it didn't take long at all, and it's not nearly as scary as it first seems. You get the hang of it, and the more you do it the more confident you get. For me, reading for others is the best way to learn.
