The 8/Pentacles is a card for learning new skills, increasing knowledge and gaining qualifications.

The pages can always be students of their particular discipline--the Page of Wands is most especially the burning student, diving into the books to learn all he can.
Then there's the Hermit and The High Priestess. Indicative of investagation and solitary study. Also higher education and/or teachers--primarily one-on-one. The learning in this case is of something specialized, unique or esoteric. Theories not commonly accepted, reading ideas and books outside the accepted cannon or (in the High Priestess' case) ideas and books kept secret, ones most people don't know about.
For example, the HPS card would be indicative of post grad studies where you get to venture into the rare book library and study books few people get to study.
The Hermit, on the other hand, might be learning that is more hands-on. Learning one-on-one from a master who takes you on field trips. Very "Yoda-ish."
The Hierophant can indicate, as well, learning at the feet of a teacher, but in this case usually in a class with other students. And the subject will be more mainstream and straight forward. Commonly accepted theories, the accepted cannon.

Eight of Pentacles can signify study and skills-building, too.

Three Pentacles- learning new things, new skills under the supervison, direction and support of others, is one way of looking at that.
8 of Pentacles- applying that knowledge and perfecting it
Definately the Page of Pentacles, he is the student or has a message of something to learn from.
Maybe even the Fool, setting off into the unknown full of confidence and enthusiasm for new beginnings
