This card has been showing up in almost all my readings for around a month and I'm confused about it. My gut instinct when I see it is there is something being placed directly in front of my face that in some way I'm refusing to see. Most recently it showed up in this spread I did tonight posted by Marion in the Tarot Spreads forum:
Question: How can I become a better tarot reader?
Linear layout
1 what I already do well Queen of Pentacles
2 what I need to work on 4 of Cups
3 external resources for improving Emperor
4 internal resources for improving King of Pentacles
5 overall advice 8 of Rods
It's also shown up a couple of times reversed when asking some important questions for myself. One about career and the other when doing the Spirit Guide thread. 4 of Cups, reversed, in the what your spirit guide wants you to know position.
So what am I missing? What do I need to work on? What does my spirit guide want me to know? What is the Four of Cups trying to tell me?

4/Cups can indicate a wandering mind, unfocused, dreamy, listless. Perhaps you're spending too much time laying down tarot spreads, over anxious to be a master reader rather than--given the Emperor--working on disipline and authority, on having energy. You're anxious, indulging in self-doubts--and doing nothing pro-active. You're a hard worker (queen/pents) but you can work harder (kind/pents). If you're really passionate about it, time to get active (8/rods).
Meanwhile, your spirit guide wants you to know pretty much the same thing in a different way: that you're wasting psychic eneregy or just that the cup is currently dry. Look at that card upside down: the cup of dreams and emotions is turned over, empty. The person is still passively seated on the hill, but now they're not even daydreaming. Ditto career. You're lacking energy and creativity and dreams.
Time to get back your mental focus, your creativity and your energy. Given that King/Pents, the best way might be to do something that has nothing to do with the psyche at all. Gardening, or hard physical labor, or go to the gym and get excersize. Yoga, perhaps? Or a hike in the mountains? Time to give psyche a rest and the body a workout. Good physical health is one of the best ways to restore mental and emotional health as well as creative energy and fire.

Firemaiden,
Thanks, that's an excellent idea. I'm going to do it.
Thirteen,
Thanks for your insights. You really summed up the reading well. I have been indulging in many self doubts lately, not about the tarot in particular, but a few other avenues of my life. This along with my passion and excitement about tarot in general has led to laying too many spreads at times, and I can feel it when I'm doing it. I do feel better when I back off and allow the spreads to just "be" with me for a while. My passion for learning the cards is a challenge to putting them down and giving it a rest.
If you wouldn't mind taking a look at my Spirit Guide Spread I would greatly appreciate it. I did the spread about a week after my father passed away and I always felt it was a message for me from him. I would love to get some deeper insights. Thanks for all the help. EAB
