Someone told my friend that a tarot deck given as a gift would tamper the accuracy in readings. Personally, I don't buy it. Especially when I asked for a specific deck, that is, I made my own pick. But does anyone have any first-hand experience with reading with a gift deck, and how well does it work for you?

druid,
there are so many "assumptions" out there and most are false..VERRY FALSE..
What I found (as an owner of 50+ decks) is that if you connect with a deck it doesnt matter where you got it. The ones that are gifts or came in trade are special to me for sentimental reasons only, they don't read or feel any different.
This falls into the "you have to store your cards in silk" "You can't let anyone touch your cards" type of asumption. The key is JUST DON"T DO ANYTHING TO DAMAGE THE CARDS and go for it...
Good reading..

It has no connection to accuracy at all, it just means the person receives a deck as a gift, nothing more. Don't fall for myths. Black cats aren't bad luck, broken mirrors just mean you have to clean up some glass, and giving a deck means someone got a present.

I was told that one's first deck HAD to be a gift!!! How's that for confusing??
My first deck did happen to be a gift and I loved it then and still love and use it today.....
Go with what feels right and you can't go wrong! :)

After all, when you really get down to it, it's a bunch of cards with pictures on. What it becomes is what you make of it, not where it came from. :)

Ohhh, again with the gift issue... sighs..
Please understand that our exasperation is not with you, but with the fact the people are given this silly superstition that the presentation of a deck of cards gives or takes away its "power".
Look inside you...develop the power and understanding in you. Don't rely on these pieces of cardboard to hold all the magic.

yup, i hear you guys. I pretty much took that as BS too. After all, it's all psychological. If you believe it, it may be true for you. But I don't.

The gift of a Tarot Deck may be to give you a little hint that "the gift" is that you have the gift to read.
I don't feel that someone has to give you a deck.

Yes my first deck was gifted. "I Gifted it to myself" and it was the most meaningful gift that I have ever had.
Superstitions! If you believe in something enough, it will happen. It's all bullpaki!

I'd heard this 'urban myth' a couple of times before I joined Aeclectic - but if I'd have waited for someone to gift me with a tarot deck, well I'd still be waiting lol - although a friend did give me the Diamond but that was later.
I wonder if this myth comes from traditions such as maybe a wisewoman passing the tools of her craft down to an apprentice, not just tarot cards - or being presented/gifted with a deck, or runes, bones, etc. And its been somehow paired with tarot.
I'm a first generation reader in my family but hopefully I will be gifting my son with his first tarot deck - but No I don't believe that a first deck has to be a gift. :)

A gift of Tarot for someone who is interested but possibly overwhelmed by all the superstitious nonsense and choices, would be a really nice thing to do to get them started and help them dispell a lot of other myths. Last night was a good example, I got to explain Tarot, say "Yes, you can read for yourself, it's ok if other people touch your deck if you don't mind, but daughter, you don't mess with the deck in the middle of a reading!!!" As well as my own personal thoughts, that Tarot is a tool to focus your thoughts, that it gives great advice, but don't substitute it for making up your own mind or let it make your decisions for you.
I know if I had waited until someone gifted me with a deck before I began to learn, I'd still be waiting and waiting and never have gotten started at all. As usual the best gifts are the ones I truly want and most often the ones I give to myself.
