I was reading a Tarot newsletter that I get .. and there was an interesting Tarot Tip listed that I wanted to share.. Of course, I deleted the link (accidently) to the newsletter, so now I have to paraphrase...
It was called something like "reverse mapping.."... but it used numbers to help clarify reversed majors that show up in a reading.
For example... If Temperance came up reversed in the outcome position it could signify things getting out of balance. If you reduce Temperance (1+4=5) you get the Hierophant. So, the key to restoring balance could be found through some form of established beleifs, etc..
Perhaps this is not new, but I've never heard or considered it before...

I've not heard of this technique before, it sounds interesting and viable -- thank you for sharing it.

Thanks for sharing this dolphinprincess -- I love this idea. Was this method only suggested for the majors? What if it were a single digited major reversed?

I originally saw this tip in a newsletter I get from www.tarotwisdomreadings.com
"Velvet Angel" runs the site and is super sweet. There are tons of pictures of different decks / reviews .... That is how I stumbled across the site. In any case she sends out a monthly newsletter.
She replied to my email with the following information (very detailed :D) Hope this helps..
I am copy / pasting it directly from the email I received...
"Hi, Jill
Thanks for your great questions about the Secret Paths Tarot Tips from my recent newsletter. If a single digit major card comes up reversed and you want to find more information/advice about that card than what is obvious just from the reading itself, you can still go to it’s numeric equivalent.
21 - The World / 3 - The Empress
20 - Judgement / 2 - The High Priestess
19-The Sun / 10-The Wheel of Fortune
18-The Moon / 9-The Hermit
17-The Star / 8-Strength
16-The Tower / 7-The Chariot
15-The Devil / 6-The Lovers
14-Temperance / 5-The Hierophant
13-Death / 4-The Emperor
12-The Hanged Man / 3-The Empress
11-Justice / 2-The High Priestess
10-The Wheel of Fortune / 1-The Magician
So . . . for example, if you drew the Reversed Magician, and needed clarification about that – perhaps to find ways to accomplish more and tap into the willpower that you need for an important task or decision, you could turn to the Wheel of Fortune card.
And if a numeric Major card that you are turning to is already among your reading layout, it would be additional confirmation that this particular card held some important information overall for the reading.
Keep in mind that you can use any type of secret path method that feels right to you. For the above example in drawing the Reversed Magician, if your focus was primarily on money issues, you could look at the picture of the card itself to determine where you want to seek more information. In a traditional Magician card, we see the Magician at his table that includes a cup, wand, sword, and a pentacle – all of the tools he needs to manifest his will and take appropriate action. For money matters, you might zone in on the pentacle he has on his table. Then you could turn to the Ace of Pentacles for additional information and advice. That is just an idea . . but since there is no “wrong” way to do this, there can be any number of interesting ways to explore the cards in more detail .
I tried to locate the original source of the Secret Paths information, but have not yet found it. I do recall that it was information posted in a “Tarot Tips” newsletter by Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone quite some time back. I think they have stopped doing these newsletters on a regular basis, but they have written a book called “Tarot Tips” that encompasses the many different tips they shared in their newsletters. I haven’t gotten the book yet to determine if it would be worth having, but I read a review stating it was a good book, but probably more geared toward the beginner.
If I run across any additional information or ideas about this technique, Jill, I’ll be sure to share it in a future issue of the newsletter.
I hope this has helped, but if you have any other questions, I’ll do my best to help.
Blessings,
~Velvet Angel~ "

You can always add or subtract 9 from/to the Major Number to get clarification about a Major Arcana card.
Examples:
The Magician [rx or upright]
1+9=10 The Wheel of Fortune
10+9=19 The Sun
The Empress [rx or upright]
3+9=12 The Hanged Man
12+9=21 The World
Going the other way let's say you draw The Fool - which would be considered Key/Trump 22 for this type of reading and subtract 9 instead of add.
The Fool [rx or upright]
22-9=13 Death
13-9=4 The Emperor

This is very interesting, thanks for sharing =)
I am definatly going to use this, since I have a Reading which showed many many reversed Cards and I think the person who it is for needs some positive vibes.

Additional Tip
Know that only the first 4 Majors, The Magician (1), The High Priestess (2), The Empress (3), and The Emperor (4) are going to have three shadow or secret path cards.
Majors 5 through 9 will only have two (2) shadow or secret path cards associated with them.
The Triads
1/10/19 (10 and 19 reduce to 1)
2/11/20 (11 and 20 reduce to 2)
3/12/21 (12 and 21 reduce to 3)
4/13/22 (22=The Fool) (13 and 22 reduce to 4)
The Duo's
5/14 (14 reduces to 5, or 5+9=14)
6/15 (15 reduces to 6, or 6+9=15)
7/16 (16 reduces to 7, or 7+9=16)
8/17 (17 reduces to 8, or 8+9=17)
9/18 (18 reduces to 9, or 9+9=18)
