In my limited experience I’ve found that using three cards without a question has worked for me. It never really has fallen into the Past, Present, Future pattern but rather a story line. I sometimes add a forth card after reading the three asking, “What do I do next.”
This has hit the nail on the head every time!

sometimes I add two more cards because the spread calls for more information.--Tao

That seems to work for me too.
In my eagerness to try out new spreads, sometimes I get my knickers in a twist!
This is nice and simple and you can read them as a story.
I like the "what next?" card too. Might try that.

This is the method I use as a starting point if the querant wants a reading, but doesn't have any particular question in mind. We then do more directed spreads based off what we see from the 3-card reading.

Cool, so I guess I'm not doing anything wrong then huh. I will try the extra two cards if more info is needed, Thanks Tao!
I love your comment about your Knickers Shy Priestiess! I couldn't help but giggle!!

I do this alot, when I read for myself. I start off with three cards and when I see what they relate to I ask questions and put as many cards down as I need (one at a time) to get to the answer.
(off tarot topic - but I also think the Answer deck is excellent for this)

In Rachel Pollack's book (think it was in 78 Degrees)--she says when she doesn't know or have questions, she pulls cards to stimulate ideas FOR questions (2 or 3), and then proceeds to pick questions and position meanings.
That way the Universe can signal you as to what you need to be inquiring about.

I do something similar as well. The funny part is, when I do a "free form" reading for myself like this (rather than a structured and journaled reading) I find I often get much more in depth meaning and understanding from the cards! NICE!
When I do this, I usually do three cards then two more cards one at a time. However, I remember one particular free form throwing that seemed to go on forever!! I think I ended up with a full 13 card spread before I was done! (and I originally did the free form to avoid having to meditate on so many cards at once!) LOL Guess the joke was on me :)

The 'what next' card does sound like a good idea, will have to try that in a bit. Now and again, an extra 3 cards, 1 to clarify each card has been useful to me.
Lol wildchilde that does seem like overdoing it. I guess its all to easy to get carried away with free form readings.
