The card drawn is: Five of Pentacles
Keywords/theme: "Carpe Diem" (Mercury in Taurus)
Good, solid, logical thinking is the indication given by this card,
with the brilliant insights of Mercury and the stability of Taurus.
Pentacles represent the tangible, physical, material world,
and Five is the number of new adventures and exploration.
I see the 5 of Pentacles as betokening a bold presence, with the
drama of majestic mountains nested on high by the great eagles.
Rise up and begin, initiate now any new and thrilling prospects.
Why calmly wait when the heavens above beckon to you..?
"Carpe Diem" means, seize the day:
"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may!"

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.
The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.
That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry:
For having lost but once your prime,
You may for ever tarry.
Robert Herrick (1591-1674)

my old mentor used to say, the true magus watches for the fives... that five is usually one to avoid. unless you like affairs with women, drugs, denizens of the underworld, or if you dont really care who your with, that five could be very good. i once had this experience while walking home from work last winter; i was walking along the road that leads south from my workplace, and as i did so, a van pulled out in front of me. a man shouted go! and a young blond guy got out of the van and ran toward me with a gun in his hand. well, he dropped the gun, looked at me, then ran back, picked up his gun, got back into the van, and sped off.... ummm when you flirt and generally fool around with taken women with men who know people... jealousy and lust and wrath truly are deadly sins......

I think that 5's are just a little shaky, that's all. The balance of the four no longer exists. Some new element has been added that stirs things up a bit and nobody knows what its going to look like after the dust settles. But I agree with Carpe Diem! Now's the time to play your hand if you want to have any influence in the outcome. Nothing to fear, but fear itself! Just be careful for heaven's sake!b

Thanks for posting that, Fulgour! I'm unemployed right now and I keep pulling this card when I read for myself. I keep interpreting it as unemployment and instability and bleakness and desolation and... ugh! :) I really like your "Carpe Diem" attitude. I'll keep that in mind.

Thanks, Fulgour for the poem. It is one of the greats.
Carpe Diem is certainly an answer to the problem of mortality -- perhaps the only answer.
I hadn't thought about it in terms of the 5 Pentacles. Thanks for that insight.

Fulgour: I also like this poem, having first read it many, many years ago.
5-Pentacles has variously indicated as "This, too shall pass" or "Now is the time" to do whatever to meet change.
As 5 the number of Man in the Earth, it tends to pertain to change & to adaptability; to that which manifests; the temporal. In a higher sense, it represents a testing stage with that of overcoming "imperfection" & achieving freedom.
Being able to adapt to changing conditions may well contribute to determining an outcome. As in the action taken, the seeds planted that permit the use of the fruits of the labours in 6-Pentacles; that call for a continuing assessment to ensure future productivity in 7-Pentacles. The wise do not leave to chance a goal but look to the most careful & productive efforts towards same--be it freedom from want or something other.
