Different SPREADS?

Ok, i am VERY VERY new with this, but i get the idea of tarot cards. I'm still quite confused with spreads. I've seen so many ppl do so many, and i've heard of so many...how many are there?? what do you use??

WhiteRaven  05 Dec 2004
My suggestion to you, seeing you are a beginner, would be to stick to an easy Past, Present, Future spread. That entails just three cards and there you can learn the individual meanings and learn to "mesh" them together...

WhiteRaven has the word "mesh" drilled into her brain and stuck there these days...personal joke if it's even funny...which I don't find..but anyways....

Try that to start with...or even just try a one card draw for a particular question...don't jump into the river of spreads to quickly...get a good grasp and a bond going with your deck and it's cards first....

That's my advice to you.

Good Luck! :)

Hi NewWithCards,

I'm a complete beginner too and have had my cards for about a week and a half now. I am mainly practising with 3 card spreads, which I find a lot easier. And sometimes 2. I did a reading online for Suriel if you want to have a look at how I phrased it. All I can suggest is go with how you feel about a spread. You could start with 2 cards and clarify with another 2. Just an idea.

Welcome to AT anyway, sure you're gonna love it here.

There are literally thousands and thousands of spreads, but as a beginner, stick with the ones that only have up to 5 cards at first, it helps to not get bogged down in a reading. A one card draw is good, the Past/present/future is very popular, and there are a lot of small spreads that are specific on subject also.

Check the Aeclectic site here for spreads, and you can find a lot more over at tarotpassages or just by searching for the words 'tarot spreads' or 'tarot lays'. A few books may even be at your library.

how does the past present future one go?

HudsonGray  05 Dec 2004
1....2.....3

Card 1 = Past (either immediate or 'far' past) that leads up to the current situation you are now in.

Card 2 = Present situation that you find yourself.

Card 3 = Future most likely to come by taking the present and past into consideration.

A 3 card lay can also be done using Problem/action to be taken/most likely outcome as a result. You can do a lot with a 3 card spread.

The Three Card: Past, Present, Future Spread is great for learning each card's meaning; whether from book, intuition or a combination of both. You also will learn how to combine/link the three meanings into a cohesive message.

There are many different three card spreads, but PPF is the most common. This spread is very popular, useful, and one that you will use for years to come.

The book, Tarot Tells the Tale, is an ideal book for seeing how different uses can be made of a three card spread. Each of the many reading in the book uses a version of the three card spread to answer a question that was made (fictionally) by a well known historical or storied figure. It is both highly entertaining and instructive. Dave.

When I first started tarot, the LWB only mentioned the celtic cross spread, so that is what I learned on. I have since tried many others, mostly 3 card spreads, but I still prefer the celtic cross above all. I find I can meld the cards into a story much more accurately, if I use this spread. The reading become more complete and fleshed out. Give it a try for a reading on yourself and see what happens!

I began with the Celtic Cross right off the bat too. I always experimented with other spreads, but a lot of them seemed pulled out of thin air without a lot of thought put into them.

Of course, it took a long time to master the CC, but I think the most valuable thing that helped me get really comfortable with it was that the meanings and positions are not written in stone or with blood, so I eventually tweaked it to suit me and the way I read by taking various authors' positions and using them as I see fit.

Hi, NewWithCards!

I'm new to the Tarot myself and I agree with the posters who say to stick with a simple 3 or 5 card spread for awhile. I caved in to the CC after a month or so and, boy did it confuse me. I couldn't make heads or tails of it so I posted a query here and (thank you, Moonbow!) received some help. I was very frustrated and confused.

Just my two pennies!

I agree start with 5 card spreds or smaller to get going. Though I know some spreds I tend to let my intuition tell me how many cards to put down and which order to read. Rarly wrong this way.

I hate the Celt cross!!!! I never ever use it. There are other spreds that are just as detailed and less confusing.

Have Fun exploring,

CloeCat
