Novels/Short Stories that contain tarot readings ...

These books are on my back burner of things to eventually read. Are there any other prospects to add to this list? Thanks.

  • "The Castle of Crossed Destinies", by Italo Calvino, translated into English from the Italian. Has also been translated into Spanish and various other languages. Half the book is intuitive-style readings using a Visconti deck, while the other half is with a Marseilles deck.

  • "Last Love in Constantinople: A Tarot Novel for Divination", by Milorad Pavic, translated into English from Serbo-Croatian. Not sure if there are any tarot readings therein.

    Fictional deck
  • (Byzantine Tarot)

  • "Le langage secret du tarot", by Sylvie Simon and Marcel Picard, in French. Marseilles deck.

The best novel, bar none, that I know of that involves Tarot Cards is Bone Dance by Emma Bull. An amazing work of science fiction where the character follows a reading laid out--and travels a Fool's journey beginning to end. Fascinating book that links Tarot to voodoo and a post-apolcolyptic world.

Unfortunately, it's out of print and hard to find. Maybe at some library or other?

I've just added "The Castle of Crossed Destinies" to my Amazon wishlist :). It looks like a fascinating read and has good reviews on Amazon.

The only other book I can think of right now is "The Fool's Journey: A Romance", by Lynn C. Miller. Not sure if this would be a good book or not, could just be a silly romance, but tarot readings are involved.

Thanks for the suggestions Rusty!

If the Ottawa public library doesn't have it, you can probably get it through inter-library loan.

Tom Robbins: Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas

Michel Tourner: Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique. (Here is a thread I started to discuss the reading in this novel: Michel Tournier’s Reading for Robinson Crusoe) The Tournier novel is a re-writing of the Robinson Crusoe story with a sort of structuralist/bachelardien/freudian slant. The entire novel unfolds as predicted from the tarot reading in the prologue.

"The Castle of Crossed Destinies" is great! The copy I bought on-line last year had comments written in ink as the reader went through the book and wrote her "answers" on the tarot layout. Certainly worth getting ... and don't be afraid to write in the margins!! :)

My Favorite is "Lammas Night" by Katherine Kurtz, and "Tarot fantastic" - a compilation editied by Greenberg & Schimel - that has 16 tarot-related tales in it. Try doing a search for used books.

Periodically, books by Mignon Warner pop up in odd places. One of them is "TheTarot Murders" - o.k., but she solves the mystery WAY TOO EASILY - I mean, even Angela Lansbury had to interview people two or three times to discover whom the murderer was!

I think there is only one copy in all of the Ottawa libraries and I got it today :) I had it transferred from the Nepean Library.

Imagine a group of travellers (strangers) meeting at a castle in the middle of a forest and finding themselves mute and their only means of communication to be a Visconti tarot deck. Their stories begin to unfold in a fascinating way.

Italo Calvino's card interpretations are very interesting, especially for the minors---very imaginative.
