good day
i am still relativly new to this forum, and have been highly impressed by it, most especially by the deck study groups that have already aided me fantasticaly in my search for meaning However what i find one of the most difficult aspects of reading is understanding sybolic meanings within cards, as they are deffinate factual things and are rarely open to direct interpritation.
i find it very easy to locate the key theme of each card and devise a story round it, but when it comes to knowing what a purple background and 3 crows, means sybolically i am stumped. Although i understand that each indavidual interperates a card in there own indavidual way, i also belive that to find a truly consise meaning within a card i must have some sort of factual grounding, and so i think i (and maybe others) would find it very benaficial if together we formed a sort of online dictionary of symbolic meanings including topics on:
colour
animals
& number
it is very possible that this has been done before, if so could somone direct me to it, it is also equally possible that what i am suggesting is incomprihensivly stupid, if so, humour me.
best wishes to you all

Very often it is seeking for the anwers that will help the most,
because you never really do know what you are going to find.

Nice link. I didn't have any of the decks she used as examples, but can apply a lot of it to the decks I have.

Well, I love discussing symbolism, and have many wonderful repertories of symbolism at home to consult. Personally, I do not think we need a separate sub-forum, because we can discuss it right here on this one, which is specifically meant to address card meanings and symbolism.

I have a book, "A Dictionary of Symbols" by J. E. Cirlot published by Barnes & Noble the bookseller, the original was written in Spanish but this is all in English. I've seen other books on symbology also. Dave

Hi and welcome!
Chevalier and Gheebrant's Dictionary of Symbols is a wonderful classic, published by Penguin in paperback. Crows and purple backgrounds guaranteed, and the number three.
You might also want to have a look at some Pythagorean numerology sites, too - very good for number symbolism.
